CLASS TITLE: COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide specialized support services to computer users at an assigned high school site serving as initial contact person for user related questions and/or problems; perform basic technical repairs, maintenance and installation of computers and peripheral equipment; plan to organize, and schedule computer laboratory activities; assist in the day-to-day operations and activities of a school technology environment. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class performs instructional support and basic computer maintenance tasks, and requires organizational communication, and basic technical skills as well as a high degree of positive contact with both students and staff.
SUPERVISOR: School Administrator and Information Services Director
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Provide user support services at an assigned high school; assist students, faculty, staff, and administrators with computer hardware and software operation.
Perform technical duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of computers, peripheral equipment and software; order replacement parts and other materials as needed.
Install, administer and troubleshoot site based server installations
Prepare computer laboratory for scheduled use by teachers, including checking equipment, loading appropriate software and arranging temporary disk storage as necessary; assure safe and proper use of equipment.
Respond to reports of equipment malfunction, client and software problems; diagnose, troubleshoot, adjust, and repair hardware and software; refer repairs requiring factory service of warranty-covered repair to appropriate vendor or service agency in accordance with established guidelines; deliver and pickup equipment as needed.
Install, configure, and network new equipment and new software, assure proper system operation.
Act as liaison between user community and I/T management regarding system use, development, improvements and related needs.
Attend a variety of workshops, conferences, and seminars to stay abreast of new technologies and techniques related to optimizing performance of the district’s technology infrastructure.
Maintain current back up of appropriate files; monitor and control disk, network, and workstation information-storage utilization.
Prepare and maintain records and reports related to computer lab use, equipment inventory, anticipated replacement needs, software licenses, maintenance requests, and purchases.
Research and recommend the purchase, replacement or disposal of computer equipment; research and identify software solutions in response to faculty and administrative requests.
Assist with identifying and implementing staff training as required.
Train and supervise students to assist in the above mentioned duties.

Methods and procedures used in the basic operation, adjustment, and maintenance of computers and related peripheral equipment.
Terminology, basic operating systems, server software and educational applications related to computers such as…Windows, Internet, Email; TCP/IP desirable.
Methods, materials, and equipment used in operating and maintaining a computer laboratory.
Operation and maintenance of computer networks and related hardware, software, and network cabling/wireless connectivity.
Interpersonal skills for effective oral and written communication.
Ordering and warehousing materials and supplies.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies.
Preventive maintenance techniques.
Health and safety regulations.
ABILITY TO:
Provide technical support to students, faculty, staff, and administrators at assigned site.
Learn procedures, operations, and activities of assigned computer labs, including software programs and to effectively apply them.
Maintain accurate records, inventories, and files related to assigned duties.
Plan, organize, and schedule the use of assigned computer lab facilities.
Understand and follow both oral and written instructions and to communicate
effectively in both oral and written form
Operate, maintain, and adjust computers and related peripheral equipment.
Assist others in the operation of a computer as it relates to software programs.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others in the performance of required duties.
Test, troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning hardware and software.
Install, configure, and network microcomputer equipment.
Stay abreast of technological advances in the field.
Work independently with little direction.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: two years of college-level course work in computer science or related field and two years experience in the operation and maintenance of microcomputer equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Computer lab and school office environment

• Long periods of standing and walking
• Exposure to high voltage
• Occasional lifting and carrying of up to forty-five pounds
• Sitting for extended periods at a computer station
• May be required to drive personal vehicle in the course of duty
Licenses and other requirements:
• Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance
• Evidence of TB clearance
If required to operate a vehicle:
• Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
Acceptable driving record and qualification for insurability by the District’s insurance carrier
