JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE:   Custodian

 

Job Purpose Statement/s: The job of “Custodian” is done for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility; providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage loss, and liability exposure.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Arrangesfurnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events.
  • Assistsother personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Attendsin-service training (i.e. blood born pathogens, CPR, First Aid, etc.) for the purpose of receiving information on new or improved methods and/or equipment.
  • Cleansschool facilities (i.e. classrooms, offices, gym, restroom, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Evaluatessituations (i.e. involving other staff, students, parents, the public, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Informsstudents, other site personnel and supervisor for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities.
  •  Inspectswork areas for the purpose of ensuring safety and cleanliness, and identifying necessary repairs do to vandalism.
  • Maintainssupplies, equipment, vehicle, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of required items.
  • Preparesreports (i.e. safety hazards, work orders, requisitions, vehicle maintenance record, etc.) for the purpose of documenting information.
  • Repairsfurniture and equipment for the purpose of ensuring that all items are available and in safe working condition.
  • Requestsequipment and supplies for the purpose maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items as needed to properly maintain facilities.
  • Respondsto emergency situations (e.g. injured student, broken window, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns. 
  • Securesfacilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at work site.

 

Job Requirements- Qualifications:

  • Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

       Knowledge to perform basic math including fractions, percents, and ratios; to read procedures, write complex sentences and speak distinctly in English; to apply common sense understanding of detailed multi-step instructions.

       Skills to perform multiple basic non-technical tasks.  Specific skills to apply pertinent codes, policies,  regulations and/or laws; communicate with persons of varied cultural and educational backgrounds; operate custodial equipment; plan and manage projects; prepare and maintain accurate records.

       Abilities to deal with a level of complexity of tasks that require significant controlling the sequences of equipment operations; significant flexibility with people; interaction with persons and/or requests that frequently change. Specific abilities to adhere to safety practices; be attentive to detail; meet deadlines and schedules; work under time constraints; be flexible.

  • Responsibility:Overall scope of responsibility is significant and generally work is not reviewed in detail. 
  • Working Environment: The job functions are generally performed in an inside and outside environment with the requirement to have the following significant physical abilities: lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling; sensory speaking, hearing and visual.
  • Educational Requirements:  High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience Requirements:  Some job related experience.
  • Licensing, Certifications, Testing Requirements: Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance; Tuberculosis clearance
  • Other Requirements:  Physical clearance for position.
