CERTIFICATED PERSONNEL DUTIES

Title:                  Speech Language Pathologist

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An earned Master’s Degree in Communicative Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited college or university and a Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential issued by the State of California. 
  • A valid license issued by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board, or candidacy for the license which will be completed during the first two years of employment. 
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) is desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be physically able to evaluate and treat students in a manner typical of those required of a Speech-Language Pathologist. See and read printed material with or without visual aids. Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone. Speak so that a variety of communicative partners may understand at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone. Sit and stand for extended periods of time, walk, bend over, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull, move, lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds to waist height. Speech and language abilities sufficient to satisfactorily model articulation and language to students with deficits in these areas.  Access and manipulate technology appropriate to job responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employees in this position will be required to work in a variety of environments in the school and/or community and will come in direct contact with students, families, district staff and the public. Driving may be necessary to meet the demands of the job. This position requires the ability to work with students with a variety of disabilities, which may include students who demonstrate behavioral challenges. 

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide effective assessment and services for students with communicative disorders in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Utilize a variety of evidence-based methods, techniques, and practices in speech and language diagnostics and therapy. 
  • Implement knowledge of fundamental principles and accepted practices, current trends, literature and research in the field of speech and language pathology. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of federal, state and local policies, rules, laws, regulations and legislation pertaining to speech and language pathology, including Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, school system and special education programs. 
  • Apply knowledge and skill in the use of a variety of service delivery models. 
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Meet deadlines in accordance with district and professional expectations. 
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner that effectively represents AUHSD and the Speech-Language Pathology profession, including sensitivity to the diverse needs of students and families.

 

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct assessments sufficient to determine presence of a communicative disorder as defined in California Code of Education 5 CA ADC § 3030, write speech-language evaluation reports, and determine appropriate services, considering least restrictive environment, in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Respond to referrals for assessment within legal timelines.
  • Participate in IEP and related meetings.  
  • Consult with teachers, parents and other related professionals regarding student speech and language functioning, classroom supports, and the referral process, as necessary.
  • Provide resources and education to staff, parents/guardians, etc., as needed to support student progress in the academic setting. 
  • Provide effective speech and language therapy services to support students with a variety of communicative needs.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of related records and reports, such as IEP's, assessment reports, progress reports, notes and files, etc., in a timely manner. 
  • Document treatment notes in district-approved Medi-Cal billing platform in a timely manner.
  • Communicate and/or collaborate with feeder schools to determine the best level of support for matriculating students.
  • Collaborate on and participate in the implementation of new programs and procedures. 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
