The principal, under the supervision of the superintendent, serves as the chief executive officer of a high school.  It is the principal’s duty and responsibility to guide, lead and direct the total operation of the school in all areas, including leadership and direction of the instructional program, business management, supervision and evaluation of co-administrators, certificated and classified staff of the school within the framework of the Education Code, Title V and District policy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Serves as chief executive and instructional leader for the whole school;

Assumes responsibility for safety and administration of school plant;

Administers the policies of the Board of Trustees and the district administration;

Administers the bargaining agreements between the District and employee unions;

Assigns, supervises and evaluates administrative, instructional and classified staff;

Provides leadership in the area of curriculum instruction and program development;

Establishes and provides a program for extra-curricular activities;

Collaborates with central office staff in planning, coordination and evaluation of District programs and personnel;

Maintains positive relations between the school, parents and community;

Serves on District curriculum and management committees.

Curriculum and Instruction

Plans, interprets and implements school and District curriculum and programs;

Provides leadership for developing long and short range plans for the school;

Oversees program and curriculum improvement;

Develops and implements plans for program evaluation;

Serves on District instructional committees;

Provides public information regarding the school program;

Ensures a guaranteed and viable curriculum for all students.

Staff Utilization

Apprizes the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources of staffing needs and collaborates in the recruitment and selection of personnel; 

Evaluates the performance of certificated personnel and provides feedback;

Develops a plan for and encourages the use of school volunteers by all staff;

Develops and supervises a program of leadership development within the school;

Establishes a cooperative motivational climate for all staff;

Pupil Personnel

Supervises the assignment of all students to ensure learning and growth;

Maintains proper pupil conduct and a suitable learning environment;

Communicates with students and encourages student expression.

Management

Establishes an effective school administrative organization with clear lines of responsibility;

Ensures school safety;

Ensures efficient use of curriculum materials, instructional supplies, equipment, buildings and school grounds; 

Serves as a member of the District management team and accepts duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent; 

Supervises and maintains site budget;

Other Duties

Performs other duties that are reasonably consistent with the functions of a high school principal;

Serves as a District officer in communication between central administration and teachers and classified employees in the school;

Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS REQUIRED:

Ability to organize, plan, coordinate and direct a variety of complex operations;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others;

Ability to select, train, supervise and evaluate personnel;

Commitment to high academic standards for all students;

Ability to critically interpret research;

Extensive knowledge of curriculum, instruction and staff development, evaluation (student progress and program);

Excellent leadership and communications skills; 

Ability to work collaboratively with staff, parents and the community; 

Understands principles of adult learning.

QUALIFICATIONS 

California Administrative Services Credential

Masters Degree or higher preferred
