Library Technician

Description

Perform paraprofessional duties in the public service areas of the library; With an understanding of applicable laws governing copyrights.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a deep class with the Senior Library Technician classification in which incumbents shall be assigned to any level, provided they possess the required education, experience and/or certification for the class to which they are to be assigned. Incumbents shall be advanced to a higher level classification upon successful completion of the qualifications needed for the higher level class.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

• Receives direction from an assigned supervisor.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

• Oversee a variety of daily activities for the library; open and close the library; monitor the library security system; secure book drops, money trays and computer terminals. Perform library cash transactions including collecting fines for overdue and lost materials and giving refunds; balance the daily cash report.

• Assist to develop and implement library policies and procedures and federal copyright laws; apply, implement, interpret and explain library policies and procedures to patrons.

• Maintain confidential patron records.

• Monitor database collection of all print, media and digital collections for the District; resolve discrepancies and regulate the electronic removal of bibliographic records from the automated database and withdrawal of obsolete and damaged library materials.

• Direct the circulation of library materials; assist with annual electronic collection inventories; discharge library materials and assist with the preparation and distribution of notices for overdue library materials and unresolved library charges. 

• Input data into District student account files to ensure accurate assessment and collection of library charges and fines; maintain patron accounts; issue library and/or Student ID cards; update status and patron information.

• Maintain security of the library collection; problem solve and monitor the book detection system.

• Resolve patron conflicts and issues. Maintain security and enforce rules of conduct.

• Provide patrons with instructions regarding copiers, the network printing systems, print card dispenser, and microform printers; ensures network accessibility to public workstations; assist users to locate materials and information from audio-visual, reserve, periodical, and special collections; place on-line requests for patrons; operate and maintain media equipment.

• Conduct library tours and perform various clerical functions; answer the telephone and respond to inquiries and requests; direct calls or take messages; maintain accurate records online and in print formats.

• Provide faculty with library assistance and materials as requested; advise and communicate with faculty regarding library policies, practices, and procedures.

• Assist with technical processing of materials as directed.

• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Operation of one or more modules of an integrated library automation system, preferably Ex Libris ALMA/Primo.

• Library catalog, online databases, and circulation database systems.

• Current library terminology, rules and procedures.

• Bookkeeping and fiscal management practices.

• Computer software applications and databases.

• Federal laws regulating copyright and interlibrary loans.

 

Ability to:

• Incorporate new and constantly changing technologies into the area workflow;

• Recommend, interpret and apply library department policies;

• Interpret, explain, and implement library rules and procedures;

• Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action;

• Operate and maintain a wide variety of computerized library equipment;

• Work independently with a minimum of supervision;

• Maintain accurate records;

• Perform mathematical calculations;

• Analyze and diffuse disruptive situations;

• Maintain effective working relationships;

• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responsiveness and cultural humility.

• Sit, stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of a computer keyboard; moderate lifting.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Education

• Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent.

 

Experience

• At least one year of related experience in a customer-service oriented position.
