This part-time (40%, 16 hours per week), 8 months per year position provides individual and group instructional assistance to students with a variety of speech, memory, cognitive and mobility limitations in a supportive learning environment; ensures student safety and security; and performs related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will share Cabrillo's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. Cabrillo College serves approximately 11,400 students per term. In the Fall of 2021, 58% of Cabrillo students are members of minoritized populations, identifying themselves as LatinX (48%), Multi Ethnic (5%), Asian (2%), Black Non-Hispanic (1%), Filipino (1%), American Indian/Alaskan Native (Schedule: Part-time (40%, 16 hours per week) assignment, 8 months per year. Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. with remaining six (6) hours negotiable; with evenings and weekends as required.
Position scheduled to begin as soon as possible, pending continued funding and Governing Board ratification. Salary is subject to proration based on the beginning date of assignment. Cabrillo is unable to sponsor work visas.

Examples of Duties
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this classification.
• In computer laboratory and classroom environments, works with students having a variety of disabilities and limitations to achieve individual goals through the development and attainment of learning strategies in such areas as speech and communications, memory improvement, computer skills, use of speech-to-text technologies and basic academics such as reading and writing; creates and adapts lessons and activities to meet the individual needs of students following themes developed by faculty; based on assessments of student achievement, modifies instructional techniques and lesson/activity content to better meet student needs and attain goals.
• Monitors student interactions and uses appropriate interventions to manage and address student behavioral issues; reinforces standard social rules and behaviors and assists students in developing strategies for anticipating and managing their own behaviors; reinforces effective social skills.
• Sets up and maintains a safe physical environment that accommodates students' individual needs; sets up, installs, maintains and services specialized assistive equipment, software, materials and supplies used in Stroke and Disability Learning Center classes and laboratories; ensures the safe transition of students in wheelchairs and with other mobility limitations between learning environments.
• Records data and maintains a variety of student records on attendance and program performance; ensures the confidentiality of student records in accordance with applicable legal requirements including HIPAA.
• Provides day-to-day work guidance and coordination to student interns and volunteers; assigns, schedules and monitors work for completeness, accuracy and conformance with District, department and legal/regulatory requirements and standards; participates in developing and evaluating plans, work processes, systems and procedures to achieve annual goals, objectives and work standards; provides information, instruction and training on work procedures and technical, legal and regulatory requirements.
• Provides input to supervisor on volunteer and student intern work performance and behaviors; assists in ensuring a fair, open and inclusive work environment in accordance with the District's mission, goals and values.
OTHER DUTIES
• Researches and stays current on new developments in pedagogy and technologies for students with a variety of disabilities and deficits.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
• Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty and staff AND
• An associate degree with major coursework in special education, speech therapy, adaptive technologies or a closely related field AND at least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience involving instructional assistance to students with brain injuries, language and cognitive deficits and other disabilities OR
• An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Desirable:
• Bachelor's degree
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
• Principles, theories, practices, methods and procedures used in instructing and tutoring disabled students with a variety of brain injuries and language, cognitive deficits and other disabilities.
• Assistive technology tools, equipment and software available to address the specific needs of disabled students in a college-level environment.
• Basic principles of learning and learning styles and limitations associated with various types of disabilities.
• Proper techniques, safety practices and etiquette applicable to working with adults with mobility impairments.
• The Americans with Disabilities Act and other local, state and federal laws, regulations and court decisions applicable to providing accommodations and support to students with disabilities.
• Health and safety practices related to working with individuals with disabilities and applicable laws and regulations including HIPAA.
• Principles and practices of sound business communication; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Community services available to individuals with disabilities, including paratransit services.
Skills and Abilities to:
• Explain and apply instructional methods and procedures in a manner that can be understood by individuals with a wide variety of brain injuries and language, cognitive deficits and other disabilities.
• Evaluate learning support needs and level of technology skills in order to adapt lessons and exercises to meet individual student needs.
• Analyze situations accurately, evaluating alternatives and adopting effective courses of action.
• Organize, set priorities and exercise sound, independent judgment within area of assigned responsibility.
• Interpret, apply and explain District policies and procedures and reach sound decisions in areas applicable to the work.
• Convey empathy and work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds who have differing types and degrees of disability, learning issues and challenges, and who bring a range of developed skills in handling an educational environment.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Operate a computer and use standard business software.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Uphold the District's mission, values and objectives including equity and Guided Pathways.
• Support an inclusive work environment that fosters diversity, respect and engagement.
