Applications are now being accepted for the position of Counselor Coordinator for the NextUp Program at San Diego City College. This position will be housed in the EOPS Department and is under the direction of the Director of EOPS, CARE and NextUp. City College is located in the heart of San Diego and is one of four colleges in the San Diego Community College District. The Counselor Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and evaluation of the NextUp program. The Counselor Coordinator will provide counseling services for the NextUp Program, in addition to coordinating the program. This is a 40-hour work week with one (1) remote work day (30 on-campus & 10 off-campus), Monday through Friday, 11-month Tenured Track assignment.
Major Responsibilities:
Work to support San Diego City’s diverse student population by providing the following services:
• Coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of the NextUp Program.
• Responsible for gathering, maintaining, interpreting, and disseminating records related to the eligibility and performance of student participants and the program overall.
• Prepare, present reports and evaluate services.
• Collaborate with Director and Technician to review all project expenditures to ensure they are in accordance with SDCCD and state guidelines, and that they are reasonable and in line with the objectives of the project.
• Assist NextUp student population with a successful transfer
• Provide personal, career, and transfer counseling and advising services to students of diverse backgrounds regarding degree completion, and career technical education program planning, career decisions, goal clarification, and personal life management.
• Provide information, guidance, and the necessary support to current or former foster youth students and the campus community to ensure that the NextUp program makes progress towards objectives.
• Assist foster youth students with the development of abbreviated and comprehensive education plans.
• Conduct individual and group counseling services in face-to-face and online formats.
• Assist students in finding appropriate college and community resources to resolve problems, and crises, which interfere with their success as students.
• Provide counseling services for probationary and disqualified students; address and identify student-learning problems in cooperation with the instructional programs and services.
• Conduct orientations and workshops for students.
• Coordinate and plan program activities and services.
• Holds regular staff meetings, and training while working collaboratively to meet program objectives.
• Participation in campus-wide and district committees, as well as regional meetings and events.
• Serve as a liaison to high schools, college departments, community organizations, and other universities and colleges to enhance services provided to students.
• Maintain up-to-date information related to legal issues impacting students who experienced foster care.
• Research different funding opportunities and develop grant proposals.
• Participate in engaging community relations with organizations and allies that support the foster youth.
• Responds to difficult and sensitive public inquiries and complaints and assist with resolutions and alternative recommendations.
• Recent counseling experience in a community college, secondary counseling/guidance or adulteducational setting.
• Experience developing and maintaining student educational plans (SEP).
• Knowledge of computer applications and technology related to counseling and teaching
functions such as (ASSIST, College Source, Cal State Apply, UC Pathways, Canvas, etc.).
• Knowledge of requirements for vocational and remediation programs, associate degree and
transfer.
• Ability to work closely with faculty in all disciplines and other programs staff to coordinate
NextUp program services.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty, administrators, partner agencies
and the community in general.
• Ability to organize, plan, develop, implement and evaluate a program.
• Ability to oversee, plan and coordinate a budget.
• Knowledge of testing materials and interpretation of career interest, personality, work values,
and similar career-relevant assessment criteria.
• Ability to exercise a considerable degree of independent judgment, discretion and decisiveness.
• Teaching experience in student success and career planning at the community college level.
• Experience and demonstrated commitment to working with first generation college students,
foster youth, students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic and disabled
backgrounds.
• Familiarity with the educational needs of community college students specifically foster youth.
• Familiarity with EOPS/NextUp programs and related activities to help promote success for
foster youth.
• Establish and maintain collegial working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, community agencies, and educational institutions.• Knowledge, training, and experience that would indicate sensitivity, understanding, and ability to work with special populations, as well as the diverse academic, socio-economic, disability, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Assist targeted students to meet their key needs, with a particular focus on financial aid, housing and community resources.
• Performs related work as required.
Qualifications:
• A master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, OR the equivalent, AND EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987, shall: (1) Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages OR (2) Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages AND In addition, an EOPS counselor hired after October 24, 1987, shall have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages.
Desired Qualifications:
• Community college counseling experience in EOPS, CARE/ and NextUP.
• Direct experience working with current or former foster youth student population.
• Recent professional experience in helping students to deal with personal/psychological problems.
• Evidence of ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Evidence of ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of academic skills.
• Evidence of ability to work with computers, multimedia, and other technologies that are utilized in providing high-quality instruction.
• Evidence of ability to conduct various academic, career and job related workshops and presentations.
• Evidence of knowledge in the use of various academic and career related programs to assist students in researching important information about the academic goal and career of their
choice.
• Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
• Commitment to the Mission and Strategic Objectives of the California Community College
system.
• Experience in a leadership role; coordinating, planning, implementing, and evaluating a student support program.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with students who experienced foster care.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing academic, career, and personal counseling to students from special populations. This includes but is not limited to the initial intake interview, collection, and analysis of verification of program participation to determine eligibility for services, development of student educational contracts, personalized case management, individual counseling, and group presentations.
• Experience and/or academic preparation in conducting assessment, advisement, orientation, and counseling services to a diverse student population.
• Knowledge and experience developing, organizing, and coordinating counseling and student support services at a higher education institution.
• Knowledge and experience in the implementation of student equity and achievement efforts in a community college setting.
• Interpreting and applying policies and regulations within a higher education setting.
• Demonstrated knowledge, ability, and experience in preparing and presenting reports and evaluation of services.
• Experience with budget monitoring and projection.
• Knowledge and the ability to identify students experiencing academic difficulties including monitoring, evaluating progress, and increasing retention.
• Knowledge and/or skill in the use of computer technology applying emerging technologies, and ability to utilize technology in promoting and enhancing services to students.
Licenses:
Pay Information:
Class 1, Step C – Class 6, Step C ($6,934.11 – $8,849.88) per month based on the https://www.sdccd.edu/about/departments-and-offices/human-resources/employee-relations/salary-schedules.aspx.
Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the https://www.sdccd.edu/docs/HumanResources/employee%20relations/Collective%20Bargaining%20Agreements/Current%20CBA%20Handbooks/SDCCD%20Faculty%20CBA%20AGREEMENT_07122023.pdf and it is non-negotiable.
The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
