Job Description Summary
Cuesta College welcomes applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in History starting in August 2024. Candidates will possess teaching and scholarly expertise in one or more of the following areas: the United States survey, the Western Civilization survey, the World History survey and other lower-division courses in the History program such as, but not limited to, History of American Women, the History of African Americans, the History of Mexican Americans, Latin American history, and the History of California. Candidates should demonstrate command of general approaches to history teaching as well as more specialized fields such as labor, economic, ethnicity, public, migration, gender, and religion.
The teaching load will be five three-unit classes per semester. Assignments may be day or evening classes at the San Luis Obispo campus, the North County campus, the South County center, or the California Men's Colony. Classes will be primarily face-to-face instruction, but some online classes may be included. The faculty assignment includes participation in program review, faculty evaluations, curriculum development, assessment of student learning outcomes, committee service, and division and college governance.
The successful candidate will be an equity-minded individual committed to collaborating with faculty, classified staff, administration, students, and community partners who share a commitment to closing equity gaps in educational outcomes. Serving all of San Luis Obispo County, Cuesta College has provided comprehensive associate degree offerings, certificates, and community programs to the region since 1964. The main campus is located along scenic highway 1, west of San Luis Obispo and east of the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. Cuesta College has a North County Campus in Paso Robles, and South County Center, in Arroyo Grande.

Essential Functions & Qualifications
Required:
-Master's in History from an accredited institution;
OR
-Bachelor's in history AND Master's in political science, humanities, geography, area studies, women's studies, social science or ethnic studies from an accredited institution;
OR
-The equivalent. (Candidates applying on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment. OR
-A valid Community College credential in the discipline (If received prior to 1990, as the credential is no longer being issued).
Also Required:
-Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Desirable:
-Teaching experience in the discipline, community college level preferred;
-Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of California Community Colleges;
-Demonstrated teaching and scholarly expertise in one or more of the following: the United States survey, the Western Civilization survey, the World History survey and other lower-division courses in the History program;
-Demonstrated teaching and scholarly expertise in one or more of the following: History of American Women, the History of African Americans, the History of Mexican Americans, Latin American history, and the History of California;
-Demonstrated proficiency in current historiography and research as well as pedagogical approaches to teaching history;
-Strong interest and experience in undergraduate teaching, and the ability to employ a variety of teaching techniques to address the wide range of skills and abilities among community college students.;
-Strong academic preparation in history, evidenced by undergraduate and graduate coursework;
-Evidence of an ongoing commitment to, and active participation in, professional development in the field of history;
-Experience teaching history with distance education;
-Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing;
-Experience in history curriculum development;
-An openness to engaging in campus-wide activities that extend beyond one's specific discipline, enriching the overall campus community.

Interview Process Information
Selected applicants will be invited to give a teaching demonstration and an interview on Monday, April 1, 2024.
