DESCRIPTION

This position is a full-time tenure track, 11-month counselor assignment in the Counseling and Matriculation Division. 

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

• Work 35 weekly hours per semester in Counseling which includes 25 hours of direct student contact and 10 hours of preparation, District/community service and shared governance. 

• Provide academic advisement for students. 

• Create educational plans.

• Assist students who wish to transfer, and who might be on academic probation or need to declare an academic major.

• Maintain records of attendance, census, grades, etc.

• Provide an environment conducive to effective learning.

• Performs other counseling-related duties as assigned.

• Participate in faculty/division meetings; curricular planning, development, and implementation; student learning outcomes: data collection and writing action plans, program learning outcomes, development, assessment, and support the (implementation; evaluation of educational programs); and college governance to advance the college's mission and strategic goals.

• Participate in faculty professional development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

• Travel between District locations is also expected.

• Assignment may include working during the day, evening or online.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent.

(NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline per CCR 53410.1.)

AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (tit. 5 § 53024.1).    

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge about or experience working with students who are underrepresented in higher academia, with the goal of reducing equity gaps.

• Counseling experience that reflects culturally responsive practices.

• Successful experience counseling at the college or university level.

• Experience using counseling software.
