Merced College is seeking a dedicated and passionate individual for a full-time, tenure track position in English at the main campus. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in the field, a commitment to serving students of varying skill levels, and a strong advocacy for innovative and dynamic pedagogical approaches aimed at ensuring student success. General Description:
Professor of English is a full time, tenure-track position in the Humanities Department at Merced College, under the general direction of the Dean of Instruction. The professor will teach a variety of courses in the field of English, as well as collaborate with colleagues in related disciplines. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening, weekend, and variable hours. The primary teaching assignment will include teaching face-to-face and online classes, and is subject to change as needed.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
• Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations
• Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students
• Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)
• Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations
• Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods
• Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
• Participate in the development and review of curriculum
• Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
• Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
• Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles
• Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
• Master's Degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition
OR
• Bachelor's Degree in any of the above AND Master's Degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism
OR
• the equivalent
• Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.
Preferred:
• Current technology skills related to teaching the discipline; a willingness to pursue future technological developments; and a commitment to integrating technology into the curriculum
• Experience teaching in different modalities, such as asynchronous, hybrid and synchronous zoom
• Experience in designing curriculum and teaching English Pathways to Career Courses
• Ability to relate the practical and the theoretical aspects of the subject matter to the student
