Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. This instructional teaching position provides the opportunity to join a mathematics department with a focus on equity and inclusion and innovative teaching strategies that enhance student success. Teaching assignments may include courses in the statistics and liberal arts mathematics (SLAM) pathway, the B-STEM pathway, and the STEM pathway. The SLAM pathway includes statistics, algebra-based transfer classes such as precalculus, finite mathematics, math for elementary teachers, and college algebra, with a B-STEM pathway that offers business calculus; the STEM pathway includes the calculus series, linear algebra, and differential equations.

General Description:This is a full-time, tenure track instructional assignment at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The professor will teach a variety of courses. The specific mix of teaching assignments will vary from semester to semester. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include face-to-face, distance education, evening and weekend hours.
Examples of DutiesEssential Functions:
• Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations• Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students• Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)• Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations• Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods• Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy• Participate in the development and review of curriculum• Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials• Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees• Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles• Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes
Typical QualificationsRequired:
• Master's Degree in mathematics or applied mathematicsOR• Bachelor's degree in either of the above AND Master's Degree in statistics, physics, or mathematics education from an accredited institutionOR• the equivalent• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
Preferred:
• Teaching experience in mathematics.• Education and/or expertise in adult learning theory and practice.• Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments.
