Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

ABOUT THE JOB: Under general supervision of the Public Information Officer, supports the marketing and communications initiatives of the district and its schools; and performs other related duties as required.

JOB DUTIES: Researches and drafts written content for press releases, newsletters, brochures, flyers, websites, internal memos, correspondence, and general marketing materials; supports social media planning, branding, and marketing; develops and implements social media campaigns to increase community engagement; develops ideas and posts content to keep social media websites updated and relevant; maintains and updates online sites and social media presence as directed by the Public Information Officer; photographs and video records school/district events including editing content as directed; develops compelling videos for social media live events, stories and reels, as well as television news pitches; engages with school sites to ensure district social media content covers all campuses; provides social media professional development and support to school sites; monitors, tracks, shares news media and social media activity concerning the District and its schools; maintains ongoing awareness of current school district issues; monitors outside social media sites to ensure GGUSD is favorably represented and promotes partnerships with other organizations and communities; designs graphics for print and websites for example flyers, brochures, and other communications; assists in the planning, organizing, and executing of a variety of special events, programs, projects, and activities related to the district’s public information efforts; prepares agenda items and back-up materials for a variety of meetings; prepares charts and statistical information as needed; attends meetings; supports crisis and emergency communication planning and support; monitors news coverage; disseminates information and responds to inquiries as directed; assists with processing and prioritizing news media requests and handles general information requests from community members; serves as a resource to others concerning policies and procedures; and attends trainings and conferences to stay current on communication and marketing trends.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field; and one year of professional experience in journalism, public relations, marketing or other communications related field. Experience working in a school district or public agency is highly preferred. Knowledge of photo and video editing programs and/or software is required. An AA degree with an additional two years of related professional experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree requirement. Part-time experience will be considered and adjusted appropriately. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered.

LICENSE: Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver License and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING….

Knowledge of: Current trends and issues in public education; public information channels and methods of distributing news; public relations principles and practices; principles and practices of maintaining content on websites and social media; principles and techniques used in establishing and maintaining strong community relations; fundamentals in writing, composition, graphic design, layout and production for mass media communications; graphic design principles and practices, including publications, design, and layout; methods, techniques, software, and equipment used in photography and video production; newspapers, radio, television, and other communications media sources and resources; diverse cultures in the community; research methods, fact sources, and statistical presentation; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; and editing and proofreading techniques; school district goals, organization, and operation; operation of a computer and assigned software.

Ability to: Effectively develop, coordinate, and implement communications across a range of communication channels including web- based platforms and social media; communicate effectively in written form utilizing a journalistic and technical writing style; compose and type correspondence from general instructions and guidelines; gather, analyze, evaluate, and interpret information and data; write reports, news releases, and related data in a creative, clear, concise manner for broad public appeal as well as specialized audiences; establish and maintain effective working relationships; relate effectively to a diverse population; proficiently use current technology for performance of duties including graphics design and publication/print software; operate a computer, digital cameras, and video equipment to capture and edit activities for reporting purposes; articulate district positions, policies, and procedures; prepare and deliver effective oral presentations; maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information; organize, edit, and lay out publications; and multi-task and complete work with many interruptions under pressure and work with priorities and deadlines subject to frequent change.
