Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Communications plans, organizes, coordinates, and oversees the comprehensive communications program for both internal and external audiences, which includes elements of community relations and media relations, serving as the District’s primary spokesperson with news media. The Director of Communications facilitates cooperative relationships with other city, county, and private organizations to project a positive image of the District. This position coordinates marketing, special events, services, programs, and other district or assigned community-related activities. This position oversees the content and effectiveness of the District’s print and electronic communication vehicles including publications, web sites, telephone/email alert systems, and social networking media. The Director of Communications attends Executive Cabinet (Leadership Team) meetings, to assist in the development of a strategic plan related to marketing District events, services, and achievements and the branding of the District; develops methods and processes to ensure the highest level of District communications.
Requirements / Qualifications
Required experience and education includes any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Mass Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, English, Journalism, or a closely related field and four (4) years of management experience coordinating high-level public relations matters. Experience in a public education system or similar public sector environment is preferable. Master’s Degree is desirable.

Performance Exam, weight: 30%, and Qualifications Appraisal Interview, weight: 70%.
The competitive basis for this recruitment is Open/Promotional - Dual Certification. Candidates who pass all exams are placed on an eligibility list in order of overall exam score. The list is used to fill current and future vacancies for six months.
Veterans may be eligible for preference points on entrance examinations ("entrance" is defined as candidates who are not current employees of the District). Please attach a copy of your DD214 to your application.
Employment with San Dieguito Union High School District is contingent upon successful completion of post-offer background check, fingerprinting, physical exam including tuberculosis, drug and alcohol screening, and an Oath of Allegiance.
The probationary period for a Director is one year of paid service.
