Under general supervision, lead and participate in custodial and routine maintenance functions and activities; perform general custodial functions in maintaining equipment, special purpose facilities, buildings, offices and adjacent ground areas in a clean, neat, orderly, safe and secure manner; and do other related work as required.
Duties and Responsibilities

- Confer with District and site personnel pertaining to the care, cleaning and maintenance of a school facility
- Unlock and open doors and gates of a school facility
- Inspect buildings and grounds for vandalism and cleanliness to ensure that the facility is devoid of potential safety hazards and meets the District's standards of cleanliness
- Inspect and review the heating, electrical and water equipment to ensure proper functioning
- May inspect and review the work of custodial work crews and provide assistance and direction as necessary
- May put up and take down flags; sweep and mop floors and vacuum rugs and carpets
- Dust and polish furniture and woodwork
- Empty and clean receptacles
- May wash windows and walls and polish metalwork
- May repair playground balls
- Move and arrange furniture and equipment in preparation for special events and meetings
- Sweep walks and corridors and pick up debris and papers from adjacent ground areas
- Maintain an inventory of supplies; requisition and store supplies, materials and equipment as needed
- Prepare work orders pertaining to major maintenance and repairs
- Assist the school personnel by performing such tasks as desk adjustment, cleaning spills and student accidents, adjusting ventilation and heating systems, replacing light bulbs and lighting tubes, and a variety of other tasks
- May provide technical input for evaluation of custodial personnel
- Assist in the planning, development, and conduct of orientation and in-service training programs
- Maintain simple inventory control records
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials and equipment used in cleaning
- Maintaining a wide variety of surfaces, equipment and furniture
- Safe practices and working methods pertaining to cleaning and maintenance
Ability to:
- Perform light to moderately heavy manual functions
- Assist in the training and orientation of new custodial personnel
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships
- Use new equipment and technology as it becomes required to perform this job
Requirements / Qualifications
Experience: • Two years of experience in custodial and maintenance work, preferable in a school setting Education: • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade

The East Whittier City School District provides educational opportunities (transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, including special education) for approximately 9,000 children. The District employs approximately 1,075 teachers, administrators and support staff. We have 13 schools which operate on a traditional school year schedule.
