Job Description

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of specialized duties related to care and education of young children and provide direction and training of child development majors in the Child Development Center and affiliated programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provide care and education for classrooms of children, 2 years old through preschool age, and interact with the children in a developmentally appropriate manner.

The planning and implementation of age appropriate indoor and outdoor activities, which reflect the philosophy of the Child Development Center.

Attend and participate in staff meetings which may include meeting with instructional faculty.

Maintain open oral and written communication with parents, including both formal parent conferences which occur twice yearly and informal parent conferences as needed.

Participate in planning and implementing team plans for children, in a developmentally appropriate inclusive environment.

Follow established District and child development safety practices.

Continually assess children based on program requirements and curriculum development needs.

Maintain departmental area(s) in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established safety procedures and regulations. Provide an environment which enhances the social, emotional, cognitive, creative and physical development of young children.

Maintain currency of qualifications for area of assignment.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

Participate in classroom rotations as assigned.

Assist students in class assignments which may include scheduling of an activity and evaluation of the activity.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Provide direction to student staff in the classroom of assignment.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:


• Child development theories and its application to providing curriculum and guidance for young children.

• Appropriate principles, practices and procedures used in child care and preschool programs.

• Pediatric CPR, first aid, and health practices.

• Effective team teaching skills for working with team members and students.

• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy in assisting college students, parents, and children.

• Telephone techniques and etiquette.

• Recordkeeping techniques.

ABILITY TO:

• Communicate effectively with children, parents, staff, students, and community representatives.

• Provide appropriate curriculum and guidance for children.

• Provide a safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate environment for young children.

• Work collaboratively with other staff, faculty , students, work study, and volunteers.

• Provide leadership to team in establishing long term and short term goals.

• Demonstrate effective interaction and guidance techniques with children in accordance with the center philosophy.

• Operate basic Windows programs for data entry/retrieval and correspondence.

• Learn the policies, procedures, activities and programs of assigned area.

• Understand and follow oral and written directions.

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, conduct child assessments and parent conferences.

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

EDUCATION:

Graduation from high school and completion of college coursework required for a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing child development teacher level and ongoing continuing education hours to maintain or upgrade permit level.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Child Development Teacher Permit, Pediatric CPR, first aid and documented training in health practices as required by Title XXII.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Child Development Center program; subject to childhood communicable diseases; must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds, see and move to help a child across the room or playground.
