BASIC FUNCTION: Under direction of an assigned supervisor, communicate with parents, teachers and administrators regarding attendance and academic and social adjustment of identified students; provide assistance to school families and refer to community resources and agencies as appropriate. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Communicate with parents and students regarding the importance of regular school attendance; explain and provide information regarding District policies and State laws and regulations related to student attendance. Operate a personal or District vehicle to make home visits to greet families new to the District; make referrals to social service agencies and community resources for food, clothing, housing, medical services and other needs. Promote parent and child participation in school by ensuring dissemination of information such as flyers and correspondence; provide both parent and student with identifiable reference sources and encourage parent involvement in school activities and classes. Establish and maintain community resource contacts as appropriate; maintain information on available community resources for use by District personnel, parent groups and families. Attend meetings of community groups; assist in the development and understanding of programs and policies of the District; participate in conferences, meetings and community projects in order to promote positive school and community relations. Communicate school concerns such as truancy, attitude, health issues to parents and community concerns to school; assist parents in communicating individual concerns in meetings with Principals or others; assist parents in scheduling teacher conferences and provide translation services as needed. Attend meetings with parents, students, teachers and administrators to resolve student attendance and related issues; prepare agendas, minutes and letters of notification as appropriate. Contact public safety agencies, other school district personnel, social workers and others regarding school attendance; obtain and provide information related to student and family needs and problems. Operate a computer terminal, printer, copier, facsimile machine and other office equipment. Attend open house, back-to-school night and other school activities. OTHER DUTIES: Perform routine clerical work in support of school programs and activities as assigned. Assist as needed in the school health office; assist ill or injured students and assist the nurse in screenings and testing procedures as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: District policies and State laws and regulations related to school enrollment and attendance. Cultural background of minority, ethnic and disadvantaged groups. Community resources including public agencies and private organizations. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Telephone techniques and etiquette. Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. Oral and written communication skills. Safe and defensive driving techniques. ABILITY TO: Promote school/community relations. Assist parents in resolving school/student related problems. Promote parent and child participation in school. Learn District organization, operations, policies and objectives. Work independently with little direction. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Work effectively in a multi-ethnic setting. Make home visits to discuss student attendance issues. Analyze situations and determine an effective course of action. Work confidentially with discretion. Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Operate office equipment including typewriter, computer terminal and printer, calculator and facsimile machine. LICENSES AND OTHER CERTIFICATIONS: Valid California driver’s license. Some positions in this class may be required to possess or obtain a current first aid certificate issued by an authorized agency. Some positions require the ability to speak, write and understand a designated second language. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of work experience related to the needs and issues of disadvantaged people. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: School office and community environment; subject to driving a vehicle to various locations to conduct work. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: See to file materials and enter data in computer equipment; speak and hear clearly and distinctly to present and receive information in person or on the telephone; manipulate hands and fingers to operate keyboards and other office machines; stand, walk, reach, bend, crouch and stoop to retrieve and file materials in filing cabinets and storage areas.
