SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PAINTER BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of a Carpenter/Painter Supervisor, perform skilled maintenance painting work in protecting and decorating surfaces of buildings, fixtures, furniture and equipment. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Apply paint, varnish, stain, lacquer, and enamel to building interiors and exteriors, fixtures, furniture and equipment. E Apply paint by brush, rollers or spray machine. E Mix and match paints. E Perform line striping of courts, parking lots and lanes; paint curbs, signs and doors. E Erect and remove scaffolding and swing stages and operate hydraulic lift. E Remove or cover objects to protect them from spattered paint. E Prepare surfaces by scraping, burning, sandblasting, water blasting, sanding, sealing and washing and by applying putty and patching to holes and cracks. E Clean brushes and equipment and provide for proper maintenance of equipment and tools. E Requisition painting supplies as necessary. E Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, materials and equipment used in the painting trade. Basic qualities of various paints and sealers used for school plant purposes and their adaptability and uses in specific situations. Health and safety regulations. ABILITY TO: Mix and match paints; harmonize and contrast colors. Apply paints by brush, roller or spray gun. Use and care for painting tools. Perform and work from ladders and scaffolds. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Work cooperatively with others. Work safely around students. Lift moderately heavy objects. Operate sandblasting and water blasting equipment. Perform the essential functions of the job. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and four years varied experience in painting work including one year at the journey level. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Exposure to fumes. Indoor and outdoor work environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned maintenance tools and equipment. Climbing ladders and working from heights. Walking over rough or uneven surfaces. Lifting and carrying moderately heavy objects, normally not exceeding sixty (60) pounds. Heavy physical labor. Seeing to perform maintenance activities, read materials and drive a vehicle. Standing for extended periods of time. HAZARDS: Working at heights. Fumes from paints and solvents.
