DEFINITION: 

Receives general supervision from the Painter/Glazier Supervisor to perform skilled work in the preparation of surfaces for painting and in the mixing and application of paints; and perform related duties as assigned.  May exercise technical guidance over less experienced workers.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below (E).  This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.)

Use a brush, roller or spray gun in applying paint, shellac, enamel, lacquer, acrylics, varnish, or other protective or decorative finishes to various surfaces for painting or repainting. (E)

 

Paint or repaint parking lots, curbs, playgrounds, gymnasium floors, sports fields using a line striping machine. (E)

 

Caulk joints to seal and weatherproof surfaces. (E)

 

Remove graffiti by sanding, using chemicals or painting. (E)

 

Tape and texture sheetrock walls.  Make repairs to stucco walls. (E)

 

Refinish furniture and other equipment. (E)

 

Repairs and installs ceramic tiles. (E)

 

Clean brushes, tools, and other equipment. (E)

 

Assist with performing skilled work in installing and replacing glass, plastic and fiberglass as needed

Engrave name tags and signs for desks and doors using an engraving machine.

Ability to set up scaffolding, use ladders and extension ladders, operate man lifts, boom trucks and fork lifts. (E)

 

Assist in making estimates on time and materials for painting jobs. (E)

 

Maintain inventory of stock. (E)

 

May be required to respond to emergency calls.

Maintain cost records of time and materials. (E)

 

Maintain regular and prompt attendance in the work place. (E)

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Standard practices, methods, materials and equipment used in painting, tinting, and finishing work.
  • Methods of preparing different surfaces for painting and repainting and painting techniques for brush and spray gun methods.
  • Proper use of putty and molding as applied to wood and metal.
  • Oral and written communication skills.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Mix and apply paints.
  • Erect and work from riggings and scaffolding.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Learn methods, materials, tools and equipment used in cutting, setting and installing various kinds of glass, fiberglass and plastic.
  • Maintain simple records.
  • Use power spraying equipment and other power equipment.
  • Read and write at the level required for successful performance on the job.
  • Physical capability sufficient to perform job tasks.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Carry out oral and written directions; write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to: one year of experience as a journeyman painter experience.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor and outdoor work environment.

Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.

As required must wear protective devices such as earplugs, dust mask, coveralls, gloves, safety boots and safety glasses.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee in this position must have/be able to:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of trade tools.
  • Walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • See with/without assistive devices sufficient to perform assigned duties.
  • Lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs for distances up to 100 ft.
  • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 100 lbs for distances up to 100 ft.
  • Push/pull up to 150 lbs. for short distances.
  • Sufficient body movement and balance to bend at the waist, kneel, crawl, crouch and stoop.
  • Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Climb ladders and working from heights.
  • See, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively with others.
