Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. As a member of the Business & Fiscal Services Department the Accounting Specialist position will support and assist the College in meeting its operational needs by performing a variant of complex specialized accounting functions requiring independent judgment and specialized accounting skills. Primary functions may include processing, recording, updating, validating, interpreting, analyzing and reconciling fiscal information in compliance with established policies; providing instructions, recommendations, and/or accounting support to other personnel; and analyzing expenditures against budget. General Description:
The Accounting Specialist provides highly specialized accounting skills in support of department activities with specific responsibility for the processing, recording, updating, validating, interpreting, analyzing and reconciling fiscal information in compliance with established policies; providing instructions, recommendations and/or accounting support to other personnel; and analyzing expenditures against budget.
Examples of Duties
Representative Duties:
• Analyzes financial information and implementation of accounting procedures
• Identifies potential budget variances, compiles statistical information, develops procedures, and conforms to established accounting practices and regulatory requirements
• Assists auditors by providing supporting documentation and information on internal process that is required for audit
• Performs or assists with banking or treasury related functions
• Collaborates with team members in the preparation of a wide variety of written materials and electronic financial information
• Monitors a variety of financial information and activities
• Participates in periodic internal reviews and ensures compliance with established accounting practices and regulatory requirements
• Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops
• Assist with and provides training to staff and college community relating to accounting processes and procedures
• Performs maintenance of a wide variety of financial information, files and records and provides assistance in compiling a wide variety of financial information related to work assignments
• Processes a wide variety of financial information
• Provides support to other departmental personnel as assigned
• Assists in the recommendation of policies, procedures and/or actions on issues that relate to accounting functions
• Reconciles a wide variety of financial data
• Ensures accuracy and adherence to established procedures prior to processing

Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
• Associate's degree AND four (4) years of applicable experience OR applicable certifications
OR
• Bachelor's degree AND one (1) year of applicable experience OR applicable certifications
OR
• The equivalent education and experience
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
