INTERPRETER/TRANSLATOR

DEFINITION
Under the general supervision of the Administration, the employee in this class is responsible for interpreting and translating for the School District, for the School Sites or at School related activities. They will provide services which will contribute to the effectiveness of the education program goals.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Translates a variety of documents including but not limited to instructional materials, office forms and printed materials that will be distributed to the public; administer and monitor primary language testing and special education placement tests; parent state mandated notifications (STAR, CAHSEE, CELDT, etc); assists in typing, duplicating and filing of translated materials; assists school and district staff in interpreting at various meetings as needed; assists in the daily scheduling of school's requests for interpreters; assists school and district staff with parent and student contact both through community visits, telephone calls and emails; assists in communication of parent and student needs to school staff and district/school concerns to parents and students; go to school sites as needed; performs other duties as assigned
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education and/or Experience: Read, write, and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed; experience in working with people is desired.
Knowledge and Skills: Requires record keeping, office organization and clerical skills. Must demonstrate word processing and data entry skills using a personal computer and established formats. Knowledge of office practices and procedures and operation of common office equipment including computer. Must be proficient as a typist.
Abilities: Requires the ability to read, write, and speak English and a second language fluently. Must be able to make translations from English to a second language and a second language to English with speed and accuracy. The ability to work effectively with staff, students and public. It is essential that the employee have the ability to follow oral and written direction.
Physical Abilities: Requires sufficient arm, hand and finger dexterity in order to operate a personal computer keyboard, typewriter and other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers. Requires lifting of light to moderate objects on an occasional basis, heavy weight objects on an infrequent basis and sufficient ambulatory ability to stand for sustained periods of time. Requires ambulatory ability to go to different locations. Requires the ability to take precautions against a nominal exposure to health and safety risks. Requires speaking and hearing to communicate in person or over the phone.
Licenses and Certificates: Must be able to obtain a valid California Drivers License
