SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision from the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, independently performs journey-level mechanical duties in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of automotive and other power-driven equipment; performs preventive maintenance on college vehicles and equipment; and maintains a variety of records including vehicle repair documents.
May receive functional supervision, technical training and work direction from a higher-level automotive diagnostic technician.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey level class within the Automotive Diagnostic Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Lead Automotive Diagnostic Technician in that the latter position serves as a lead worker over lower level automotive diagnostic staff and is assigned the more difficult and complex work of the unit. Employees at the Automotive Diagnostic Technician level are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
• Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical and electronic problems on College automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance equipment and grounds equipment.
• Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
• Service, overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches; tune up engines; replace ignition parts; clean and adjust carburetors; diagnose and repair automotive electrical, air conditioning and climate control systems.
• Service, repair, overhaul, and adjust automotive and equipment braking systems including disc, hydraulic, and air brakes.
• Prepare and replace such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches; diagnose and repair computerized control systems.
• Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for automotive and heavy equipment; perform oxygen, heliarc and acetylene gas welding and brazing.
• Maintain and repair shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
• Assist in the timely purchase of parts and materials used for repair and maintenance; maintain files of equipment catalogs, service and parts manuals; maintain work, time, and material records.
• Assist others in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.
• Perform related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
• Computerized diagnostic equipment and other tools and equipment used in troubleshooting and diagnosing malfunctions in gas and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
• Modern methods and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, maintenance and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.
• Operation, repair and maintenance of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment.
• Operation, maintenance and repair procedures and ability to apply them to specific repairs and work schedules.
• Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
• Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.
• Methods and techniques of performing diagnostic troubleshooting services.
• Principles and methods of preventive maintenance.
• Methods, materials, practices and tools of equipment repair.
• Operational characteristics of standard automotive equipment.
• Basic mathematical principles.
• Principles and practices of record keeping.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Pertinent federal, state and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
• Use computerized and other testing and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and perform minor and major maintenance and repairs accordingly.
• Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs; order and replace malfunctioning parts as needed.
• Test, adjust, maintain and repair mechanical, air, hydraulic, air conditioning and electrical systems, including integrated, complex and technical, computerized systems involving engine, electronic fuel Injection, emission controls, electronic overdrive transmissions, anti-lock brakes and electronic climate control.
• Operate computers and other electronic diagnostic and testing equipment and tools used to maintain and repair vehicles.
• Perform a variety of welding work.
• Safely and effectively operate a variety of power and hand tools used in heavy and light equipment repair.
• Maintain clean and orderly work areas.
• Maintain records and reports related to work performed.
• Observe workplace health and safety regulations.
• Work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Work with and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the varied racial, ethnic, cultural, sexual orientation, academic, socio-economic, and disabled populations of community college students.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in the troubleshooting, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles including integrated, complex and technical, computerized systems involving engine, electronic fuel injection, emission controls, electronic overdrive transmissions, anti-lock brakes and electronic climate control.
Experience:
Two years of experience performing a full range of skilled maintenance and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, including integrated, complex and technical, computerized systems involving engine, electronic fuel injection, emission controls, electronic overdrive transmissions, anti-lock brakes and electronic climate control.
License or Certificate:
• Possession of a valid California driver’s license and proof of insurability.
• Possession of an EPA certificate is desirable.

Environment: Work is performed in a shop environment; occasional field environment with some travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Occasional exposure to risks controlled by safety precautions. Positions may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
