BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the supervision of the classroom teacher performs the necessary duties to assist in the planning and implementation of a center-based early childhood education program for children.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Instructional Support:

 

  • Assist with planning and implementation of suitable learning experiences for children.
  • Assist in maintaining supervision of the classroom environment and playground.
    • Assist in the management and shaping of children’s behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies.
    • Assist in the development of a variety of instructional materials for use with individual and small groups of children or in activity centers.
    • Perform a variety of regular clerical duties, such as filing, typing or duplicating materials, maintaining children’s records, attendance, and files.
  • Operate a variety of instructional media, office machines, and equipment.
    • Maintain classroom management in the absence of the teacher for the purpose of conducting official school business.
    • Assist in maintaining neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment by performing such tasks as arranging displays, or preparing bulletin boards; may assist in parent conferences; may administer basic first aid; may use bilingual abilities in dealing with assigned duties related to children, public, and staff.
  • Assist children in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
  • Assist in the collection of observations and recording of child development and progress.
    • Maintain awareness of and provide for children’s daily health care needs and appropriate action as needed e.g. diaper changing, apply first aid, daily health checks, etc.
  • Assist in completing developmental screenings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Assist with toileting and diaper changing of students with appropriate adult supervision per established

District protocols.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of:

 

General concepts of child growth and development principles and child behavior characteristics. Techniques used in controlling and motivating children.

Correct English usage and grammar.

Simple record keeping and record management. Basic computer use and data entry.

Age appropriate CPR/First Aid and basic safety and health strategies to be applied with students (District will provide training).

Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.

 

Ability to:

 

Work effectively with children and parents. Carry out oral and verbal directions.

Respect the confidentiality of center-related incidents and information.

Communicate intent/philosophy of program to families and within the community. Handle challenges presented from daily instruction and care of young children. Operate necessary program equipment.

Sustain cooperative relationships with those contacted in course of work. Bilingual and/or bi-literate ability is desirable.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.

Operate various instructional, therapeutic and office equipment.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education:

Valid California Child Development Associate Teacher Permit is required. AA in Child Development or Early Childhood is preferred.

Age appropriate CPR and First Aid Certificate (if not certified the District will provide training).

 

Experience:

 

Two years experience of working with children in an educational or child care setting.

Up to date immunizations per licensing

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.

 

Hearing and speaking is required to exchange information.
