Welcome to the Santa Maria-Bonita School District website. We are the largest school district in Santa Barbara County with about 17,500 pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade students.                                                   MAINTENANCE WORKER II

 

BASIC FUNCTION

 Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of semiskilled and skilled maintenance, repair and construction tasks in the maintenance of school facilities; perform routine inspection of sites on a schedule and make repairs as needed and/or fill out work order requests to allow for the required repairs.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Perform semiskilled and skilled tasks of a general nature in maintenance, repair, and construction work in the basic maintenance trades, such as electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, ventilation,  metalsmithing, carpentry, audio-visual, locksmithing, carpet, tile installation, and glazingE; installation and maintenance of roofs, fences, playground equipment, chalkboards and bulletin boardsE; perform the installation, repair, and maintenance of gas and water lines as requiredE; perform the repair and replacement of floor and ceiling tile as requiredE; perform the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and cooling systems as requiredE; perform the repair of door hardware including locks and closures as requiredE; prepare surfaces, mix paints, and finish a variety of equipment, furniture, school, and physical structures as required; install and repair door and window glass as required; fill, level, smooth and prepare areas for sidewalks, approaches and slabs; mix and pour concrete and paving materialE; load, unload and drive maintenance service vehicles to and from work sitesE; perform welding, custodial or irrigation functions as required; unclog drains and repair or replace water heaters, faucets, flush valves and drinking fountainsE; plan, organize and lay out assigned tasksE; estimate labor and material costsE; requisition and maintain an adequate inventory of supplies and materialsE; adjust, repair, and maintain electrical equipment and a variety of apparatus and devices as requiredE; operate equipment, such as a light truck, tractors, and other related motorized equipment as requiredE; make installation of telecommunications systems as required; make field maintenance and repairs to clock and bell system, inter-communication equipment and fire alarm systemsE; make minor electrical installations as required; repair stoves and ovens as needed; weld metal parts together using gas and electric welding processes, and fabricate metal and sheetmetal structural items as required; assist in reporting and preventing facility vandalism; perform related duties as assigned.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Basic methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction work;

Rules, regulations, and operational procedures pertaining to the repair, maintenance, and construction of school buildings, machines, and equipment;

Safe working methods and procedures.

Ability to:

Skillfully use a variety of tools and equipment utilized in one or more of the basic maintenance trades;

Work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches;

Maintain simple records and prepare reports;

Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to:  Graduation from High School supplemented by training in one or more of the maintenance trades and one year of experience as a semiskilled or skilled worker in one or more of the basic maintenance trades.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Valid California Driver's License;

Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:

Indoor/outdoor/adverse weather environments;

Driving a vehicle to conduct work. 

Physical Abilities:

Climbing ladders;

Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally;

Lifting heavy objects;

Seeing to perform work;

Heavy physical labor;

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned tools, vehicles and equipment;

Kneeling or crouching or bending at waist;

Hearing and speaking to exchange information.

Hazards:

Working at heights;

Fumes and gases;

Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
