The Career Technical Education Department of the Long Beach Community College District is seeking qualified individuals for a current opportunity as the Vocational Technician - Automotive Technology. This incumbent will need to have knowledge of methods, techniques, parts, tools, and materials used for servicing Gasoline, Compressed Natural Gas, Diesel engines with additional knowledge in Hybrid and Electric Vehicle operation, servicing, and maintenance. We are looking for someone who has obtained an Associate's degree in Automotive Technology or related field and has two years of journey-level auto mechanics experience. • Type of positionFull Time. Saturday availability is needed. Hours will be assigned at the college's discretion as needed, depending on courses and academic calendar.

Duties

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, provides vocational instructional and clerical support in an Advanced Transportation and Technology (ATT) laboratory. Provides instruction and assists students in the proper use and operation of automotive, heavy duty, electric vehicle, and alternative fuels equipment, materials, and related technologies; performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Vocational Technician- Automotive Technology is responsible for assisting in maintaining and operating the District's ATT facility and supporting the instructional program. The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of support functions to assist faculty in the general operation of the Advanced Transportation and Technology instructional program. The incumbent may lead the work of assigned work study students. Work assigned requires a detailed knowledge of subject areas applicable to the Advanced Transportation and Technology program and the ability to provide instruction to others in an effective
manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

• Assists in the operation and maintenance of the ATT facility; assists instructors in planning for and conducting class sessions; assists students in personalized instruction of electric and alternate fuels equipment; demonstrates techniques, processes, and methods for student laboratory exercises.
• Provides instruction on the proper and safe use of equipment, tools, and materials; issues tools and supplies to students for classroom and laboratory use.
• Prepares equipment, materials, tools, supplies, and training aids for classroom instruction and student laboratory assignments.
• Prepares vehicles and demonstrations for classes, including set-up of computer stations and other instructional equipment on both light and heavy-duty engines; fuels and maintains compressed natural gas (CNG), electric, and hybrid vehicles for use in class demonstrations. Moves cars in and out of labs and storage area without damage or injury, including manual jacking of vehicle, as necessary.
• May lead work study students assigned to the program; coordinates, assigns work, monitors and provides instruction on safe work practices and procedures. Prepares and submits time cards for student workers.
• Prepares requisitions and places orders to maintain an inventory of shop equipment, tools, materials, chemicals, and supplies.
• Maintains budget, fiscal purchasing, and inventory records. Picks up ordered items from vendors when necessary. Maintains security of lab equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties in support of program activities; develops and maintains a variety of program/department records, rosters, reports, and other documents.
• Maintains ATT facility in a safe, clean, and orderly condition, which may include the moving of heavy equipment and vehicles. Follows safety protocols to operate in lab and office environment without injury or damage to equipment. Maintains, inspects, repairs, and cleans shop facilities and equipment or arranges for their repair and/or replacement. Ensures proper storage and handling of hazardous materials.
• Operates hand trucks, forklifts, and hydraulic pallet jacks.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION:

Education, Training and Experience:
An Associate's degree in automotive technology or a related field and two (2) years of journey-level auto mechanics experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge of:

• Methods, techniques, parts, tools and materials used in the maintenance of electric and alternate fuels equipment and vehicles.
• Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power, and shop tools and equipment common to the trade, including, but not limited to, battery chargers, vehicle lifts, and floor and pallet jacks.
• Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
• Principles and practices of sound business communication and correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the handling and disposal of hazardous materials and clean air requirements.
• Human relations skills with methods and practices of student instruction and tutoring.
• Administrative practices and procedures, including purchasing and record keeping.
Ability to:

• Maintain complete tool and equipment inventory records.
• Demonstrate work processes, methods, and techniques clearly and effectively to students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and skill levels.
• Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work.
• Safely operate battery chargers, forklifts, vehicle lifts, floor and pallet jacks, and other equipment.
• Refuel alternatively fueled vehicles including CNG, gasoline, and electric.
• Perform light mechanical repairs to maintain shop vehicles.
• Follow, demonstrate, and enforce safe work practices, safety precautions, and safety policies and procedures when working with students and student workers.
• Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
• Read and interpret manuals, specifications, and drawings applicable to the work.
• Use shop mathematics to make calculations.
• Organize, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility.
• Use tact, discretion, courtesy, and patience in dealing with sensitive and difficult students and situations. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with instructors, faculty, staff, vendors, students, the public, and others encountered in the course of work.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
1. May require a valid driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy.

2. A valid forklift operator's certificate must be obtained within six months of employment.

Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements, and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed.
