CLASS TITLE: LIBRARY/MEDIA TECHNICIAN
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Principal, perform a variety of library duties in the acquisition, circulation, maintenance, processing and distribution of books and instructional materials at an assigned elementary school; assist students, teachers and others in the selection, location and use of library materials and equipment.

Perform a variety of library duties in the acquisition, circulation, maintenance, processing and distribution of books and instructional materials at an assigned elementary school; maintain the library collection in a neat and orderly condition.
Circulate library books and instructional materials; check materials in and out to students and staff using an assigned computerized system; sort and shelve new and returned books and materials; mend and repair damaged books; purge obsolete materials as needed.
Input and update student, library book and other circulation data in an assigned computer system; establish and maintain automated records and files; initiate queries and generate a variety of computerized reports and documents; assure accuracy of input and output data.
Promote the use of the library to faculty and students; schedule class use of the library as required conduct library orientations; read age-appropriate stories to students as assigned.
Process and receive library materials; prepare, input and catalog books, instructional materials and other media for circulation; prepare and affix barcodes, book covers and identification labels to materials.
Monitor inventory levels of books, instructional materials and other library supplies; research and order books and other instructional materials and supplies as directed; respond to staff requests for library material purchases.
Provide assistance to students concerning the operation of library computers; advise students in proper methods of utilizing library and reference materials and systems.
Compile information and prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports and files related to library books, instructional materials, circulation, students, overdue materials and assigned activities.
Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library; assure student compliance with established library rules and policies.
Communicate with District students, personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
Operate a variety of office and library equipment including a copier, computer, scanner and assigned software.
Calculate and collect fees for lost or overdue books as assigned; generate and distribute lost or overdue book notices to students and parents.
Assist with coordinating and conducting special events such as book fairs as assigned.

Library cataloging and classification including the Dewey Decimal system.

Age-appropriate books for elementary school students.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Data control procedures and data entry operations.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of general clerical or library experience.
