Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the College serves more than 16,000 students annually with room to expand on its 267-acre main Merced campus and 120 acre Los Banos campus site. The City of Merced, incorporated in 1889, offers historical sites, affordable housing, access to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and it is the Gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra mountains as well as home to the University of California Merced campus. The college is seeking a full-time professor of Ethnic Studies. The successful candidate will bring a passion for the discipline of Ethnic Studies to teach a variety of courses within the discipline as well as contribute to the growth and development of the curriculum at Merced College. Along with Ethnic Studies breadth courses, a focus in one or more of the following areas is desired: Indigenous people groups or Native American studies.

General Description:
Ethnic Studies is a full-time, tenure-track position in the Social Sciences Department at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Instruction. The professor will teach a variety of courses in the field of ethnic studies, as well as collaborate with colleagues in related disciplines. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening, weekend, and variable hours. The primary teaching assignment will include teaching face-to-face and online classes and is subject to change as needed. The teaching load may also include our growing Rising Scholars program serving system-impacted individuals in local federal and state prisons.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
• Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations
• Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students
• Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)
• Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations
• Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods
• Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
• Participate in the development and review of curriculum
• Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
• Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
• Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles
• Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
• Master's degree in the ethnic studies field
OR
• A Master's degree in African-American/Black/Africana Studies or Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, or Asian-American Studies, or Native American/ American Indian Studies
OR
• the equivalent
OR
• see Interdisciplinary Studies
AND
• Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.
Preferred:
• Teaching experience at the college level (in-person and online)
• Teaching experience and/or education in Latinx/Chicano/Chicana studies or indigenous peoples of California
• Related experience will be considered
