BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of an assigned supervisor, maintain assigned classrooms, buildings, offices and facilities in a clean and orderly condition at one or more assigned locations; work independently in the custodial care of multiple facilities or train and provide work direction to custodial personnel at a large single site.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
In addition to performing custodial work and a variety of general maintenance duties, incumbents in the Custodian II class are assigned lead duties at a single school site or provide custodial services at multiple sites independently. Incumbents in the Custodian I class perform custodial duties involving cleaning and routine maintenance of an assigned school or District facility. The Custodian III class is a single-position class assigned to train and provide work direction to custodians at the high school. This class is distinguished from lower-level custodians by the complexity of duties resulting from the broader variety of classes, programs, activities and special events at a high school facility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform a variety of tasks related to the day-to-day custodial care of classrooms, buildings, offices and facilities at one or more assigned locations; coordinate the work of regular and part-time employees, student workers and others as assigned.
Train and provide work direction to assigned personnel; demonstrate the use of equipment, explain established policies and procedures, and ensure compliance with established health and safety regulations applicable to custodial work.
Wash windows, walls, tables, desks and benches; polish metal work; clean chalk boards; dust and clean furniture and polish wood work; sweep, scrub, mop and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas.
Clean and sanitize rest rooms; wash sinks, mirrors and toilets; empty trash receptacles; refill soap, towel and other dispensers.
Communicate with administrators and faculty regarding cleaning schedules, special needs and activities, security of facilities and other custodial concerns.
Oversee and participate in setting up meeting rooms, conference areas and other facilities for special events; move, set up and arrange furniture and equipment as requested.
Implement and oversee established facility security practices and procedures; ensure windows, doors and gates are locked and report incidents of vandalism and theft.
Maintain routine records related to work performed and materials used.
Order, store and maintain an adequate stock of cleaning supplies, materials and parts for custodial equipment; prepare requisitions for materials and supplies according to established policy and procedures.
Perform general maintenance and routine repairs such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting desks and furniture, and making minor adjustments to equipment.
Operate a variety of custodial equipment including a floor stripper, buffer, carpet shampooer, vacuum cleaner, and small power and hand tools; drive a light truck as assigned.
Remove graffiti from walls and walkways; pick up papers and debris; sweep walks; empty and clean garbage and trash receptacles.
OTHER DUTIES:
Assist in special grounds maintenance projects and seasonal cleaning projects as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements, processes and procedures for maintaining school and office facilities including classrooms, hallways and other areas.

Methods and techniques of cleaning and preserving floors, walls and fixtures.
Cleaning agents, disinfectants and materials used in custodial work.
Operation and maintenance of buffers, vacuum cleaners, strippers and other equipment.
Health and safety regulations and procedures.
Common tools used in making minor maintenance repairs.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Record-keeping techniques.
ABILITY TO:
Ensure assigned facilities are maintained in a clean, orderly and sanitary condition.
Train and provide work direction to regular and part-time employees, student workers and others as assigned.
Maintain assigned rooms, buildings, offices, classrooms and other facilities in a clean and orderly condition.
Communicate with site administrators regarding regular and special custodial needs.
Operate a variety of equipment used in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, offices, carpets, floors and rest room facilities.
Utilize hand and small power tools used in making minor non-technical maintenance repairs.
Order and store various types of cleaning materials and supplies needed.
Observe established health and safety procedures and regulations.
Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events.
Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
Communicate and work cooperatively with others.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Maintain records related to work performed and materials used.
LICENSES AND OTHER CERTIFICATIONS: Some positions in this class may require a valid California driver’s license.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and education to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed above and two years of custodial experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor environment; subject to driving a vehicle to various locations to conduct work as assigned; and regular exposure to dust, fumes and odors.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Standing and walking for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, pushing and pulling cleaning equipment, lifting, carrying, and moving furniture and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and reaching overhead and horizontally to replace light bulbs.
