APPLE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

 

CLASS TITLE: WAREHOUSE ASSISTANT

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, operate a light-duty or medium-duty District vehicle to assist with a variety of duties including loading and unloading, receipt, distribution, delivery, storage, inventory and issuance of heated or refrigerated food products, food service supplies, monies, deposits, materials, food, hot food carts, equipment and miscellaneous items.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

 

  • Inspect, record, store, wrap and issue supplies, equipment and food; note discrepancies in deliveries. (E1)
  • Load, unload and distribute food, equipment and other supplies from independent delivery orfreight vehicles utilizing a forklift, pallet jack or hand truck or other equipment. (E1)
  • Operate and drive a light or medium-duty truck or District vehicle on a regular route to varioussites. (E1)
  • Prepare and process order forms, records and documentation on deliveries. (E1)
  • Preserve food supplies under controlled temperatures following federal and state guidelines. (E1)
  • Maintain work and material inventory records. (E2)
  • Assist in packaging and distribution of non-food items including but not limited to laundry, mail,correspondence; to schools and District sites as needed. (E2)
  • Maintain cleanliness and order of the food service warehouse, food pantry and food servicevehicles. (E2)
  • Operate a variety of modern office equipment. (E1)
  • Operate and drive a District vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensivedriving practices. (E1)
  • Package and prepare unwanted, spoiled or defective products or items to be returned to vendorsas needed. (E3)
  • Familiarize and orient substitute employees. (E3)
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

A.        High School Diploma or equivalent.

B.         One (1) year of responsible warehouse and delivery experience with six (6) months of cold storage or perishable/food handling experience preferred

            Or

           Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the essential duties may be substituted for the required experience and/or education.

 

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
  • A valid California Drivers License.
  • Current DMV printout.
  • Forklift Operators Certificate within forty-five (45) days of employment.
  • Valid First Aid Certification.
  • Valid CPR Certification preferred.
  • Current state and county required food handling certificate.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Basic math.
  • Operation, cleaning and light maintenance of delivery trucks or vehicles.
  • Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Defensive driving techniques.
  • Health, safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Methods and practices of general warehouse and food storage work.
  • Operation of medium, light-duty delivery trucks and vehicles.
  • Operation, use and care of forklifts, pallet jacks and hand trucks.
  • Record-keeping and inventory methods.
  • Modern office equipment.
  • Telephone etiquette.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, logs and files.
  • Operate a forklift, pallet jack and hand truck to perform assigned duties.
  • Operate computerized warehouse systems.
  • Order food items and supplies in large quantities.
  • Properly handle and store hazardous materials.
  • Store food properly and take inventory.
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with students, staff and community members.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Adhere to schedules and timelines.
  • Understand, apply and explain the District’s organizational structure, operations, policies andprocedures.
  • Operate modern office equipment and related software.
  • Operate and drive vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Establish and revise priorities as needed to accomplish assignments.
  • Follow federal, state and district regulations, procedures and policies.
  • Use proper radio etiquette.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Bending or twisting at the waist.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to perform essential duties.
  • Kneeling, standing or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Reach with hands and arms above the shoulders, overhead and horizontally.
  • Walk over rough or uneven surfaces.
  • Lift, move, push or pull up to 50 pounds.

 

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Drives a vehicle to perform work.
  • Indoor school cafeteria and kitchen environment.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather and loud noise conditions.
  • Subject to demanding time lines and constant interruptions.
  • Subject to extremes in heat or cold due to warehouse conditions and equipment.

 

HAZARDS:

  • Exposed to adverse weather.
  • Exposed to dust and odors from cleaning agents and chemicals.
  • Exposure to diesel and exhaust fumes.
  • Exposure to loud noise levels.
  • Sitting and standing for an extended period of time.
  • Subject to angry or disgruntled people.
