Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instructional support and assistance to teachers and students assigned to a designated special education instructional program; perform a variety of support activities related to behavior management and classroom instruction of special education students; assist in the preparation of instructional materials and provide routine clerical support.

Summary of Duties: Under supervision, assists instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and in the
conduct of instructional exercises; tutors individual students and small groups of students with special learning needs to reinforce
and follows-up learning and training activities; monitors and assists students in drill, practice and study activities as a follow-up
to the presentation of instructional lessons by instructional personnel; directs students into safe learning activities and functions,
and assists in shaping of appropriate social behaviors; assists in the management of student behavior through the use of positive
reinforcement strategies and techniques; assists in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids;
maintains a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information; operates and assists students in
the operation of a variety of instructional media; monitors and assists in the remediation of specific learning problems;
administers routine first aid and requests appropriate assistance for serious injury or illness; maintains or assists in maintaining an
orderly, attractive and stimulating learning environment; participates, as requested, in parent conferences; assists students in a
variety of self-help activities; may assist students who experience toileting accidents, and children who have limited control of
body functions; may assist students with braces and other mechanical apparatus, which may require lifting and moving the
students.
Education: equivalent to graduation from high school, plus complete two years of higher education study or obtain an
Associate’s degree or higher*; good general background and work experience, including one year of paid or volunteer
experience working with children requiring a more specialized learning environment.
Knowledge of: basic concepts of child growth and developmental behavioral characteristics; student behavior management
strategies and techniques; appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar; and basic arithmetical concepts.
Ability to: demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students who exhibit physical and learning
needs of a specialized nature; communicate effectively in oral and written form; learn to utilize a variety of appropriate
instructional materials and procedures; perform routine clerical tasks; understand and carry out oral and written directions; and
perform related duties as required.

Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school, plus complete two years of study at an institution of higher education (college level) or forty-eight (48) semester units, including a math and an English class or obtain an Associate’s degree or higher* (units need to be passed with a grade of C or higher); good general background and work experience, including one year of paid or volunteer experience working with school-age children desired.
Transcripts need to be uploaded to the application reflecting 48 units or more including one math and one English class, units need to be passed with a grade of C or higher. EXAMINATION INFORMATION: All applicants must pass the basic skills test before being considered for an interview. The test will take approximately 1 hour. **The basic skills test will be waived for those applicants who have taken and passed all portions of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). Please provide a copy of the CBEST card when submitting an application for the position.
