LIBRARY TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION
Performs a wide variety of responsible, technical paraprofessional library services for students and staff, which include the acquisition, cataloging, processing, circulation, distribution and recovery of library media materials.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Library Technician independently performs advanced, or paraprofessional technical library work at a secondary school, which requires a thorough knowledge of basic library practices, and library media.
A Librarian performs a wide variety of professional library work requiring advanced education in library science.  This is a certificated classification.
A Library Assistant performs independent paraprofessional library work of an instructional nature at an elementary school site without the immediate supervision of a professional librarian.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General supervision is received from an assigned administrator.
Assignments may require the direct or indirect supervision of students, other personnel, or volunteers.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Maintains a library of reference and supplementary reading materials for students; creates and maintains display centers of available materials.
Assists faculty and students in locating and selecting appropriate library media for use in the classroom; conducts complex bibliographic and related materials searches.
Provides orientation to students regarding library use, files, and procedures.
Monitors and maintains acceptable student behavior.
Selects, orders, receives, catalogs, and processes books, pamphlets, periodicals, instructional materials, and supplies.
Prepares requisitions, receives shipments, and responds to inquiries regarding materials ordered.
Prepares materials for circulation; cross references materials for card catalogs; maintains shelves and shelf lists for inventory purposes.
Maintains a variety of complex files and records related to library operations such as inventories, shelf lists, card catalogs and lost or overdue books.
Mends and repairs damaged books; selects, prepares and records materials to be repaired or discarded.
Prepares and distributes information related to library operations and collections.
Performs related work as required.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Basic principles and practices of library science.
Use of standard technical library skills and practices in processing library media.
Types and uses of materials in the collection.
Library terminology and standard library practices, techniques, and record-keeping methods.
Ability to:
Perform technical, complex, and responsible library tasks.
Assist faculty and students in locating and selecting appropriate materials.
Relate to the needs of students, monitor, and maintain acceptable student behavior.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Categorize, organize, store, and inventory a variety of library materials.
Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Operate a typewriter or personal computer and other standard office machines.

Minimum Requirements:
Two years of experience performing sub-professional library work, processing books and materials.
Desirable Qualifications:
An Associate Arts Degree with major work in library science or a closely related field.
Written and oral proficiency in a second language.
