SAN GABRIEL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TITLE: High School Counselor QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential authorizing service in a public school. 2. Three years of previous secondary teaching experience is desirable. 3. Experience as a high school counselor is desirable. 4. Bilingual/bicultural (Spanish/Mandarin/Cantonese)is desirable. 5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Principal SUPERVISES: Classified personnel staff at the school site as assigned by the principal. JOB GOAL: The high school counselor provides comprehensive counseling services for an assigned alphabetical portion of the student body. These services consist of academic and career guidance, leading students to appropriate educational and vocational choices as well as personal and social counseling to assist students to understand themselves, make appropriate decisions, and cope with problems that confront them. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provides guidance services (including responsibility for counseling, discipline and attendance) for an assigned alphabetical portion of counselees. 2. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes, interests, and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores, past performance, and other pertinent data; works with students in choosing an appropriate career path in terms of such evaluation. 3. Advises students regarding course selections and school registration in order to meet individual needs to meet their goals including graduation and vocational interests. 4. Counsels students regarding post high school pursuits including college requirements, financial aid and vocational career opportunities. 5. Acts a resource person to administrators in constructing the master schedule of courses and classes. 6. Consults with students, parents, teachers on competency tests results and remediations. 7. Supervises the documentation and maintenance of student records. 8. Facilitates parent, student, and/or teacher conferences when appropriate. 9. Refers students with special needs to appropriate agencies. 10. Performs other duties as assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten month position (four days beyond teachers work year) with appropriate placement on teacher salary schedule plus counselor stipend of ten percent of teachers’ per diem. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
