DEFINITION:

Under the direction and supervision of the site administrator, the health clerk will perform a variety of routine health screening support activities. In addition, the health clerk will act as a liaison to the Spanish speaking community of the Nuview Union School District by providing outreach services and assisting with program planning, coordination, implementation, evaluation and other job related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Health clerks assist credentialed school nurses with providing for the health and safety of the students and managing the health office by providing: first aid for ill or injured students, administering medication, performing specialized health care services to meet the medical and physical needs of all students, and maintaining students’ health records. 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Assists nurse in screening/referral for students;
  • maintains student health records including logging information daily into the student information system;
  • type and file reports;
  • maintains clean, sanitary, and orderly health office;
  • order and control first aid supplies and other supplies;
  • arranges health collaboration meetings with parents and district staff;
  • prepares reports for the district, county, and state;
  • maintains the cumulative medical records of students who come to the health office;
  • provides emergency medical care to students in case of accidents or serious illness;
  • notifies parents, district nurse and/or paramedics for serious student emergencies;
  • as a liaison will plan and implement parent outreach programs;
  • contacts parents to inform them of available community resources such as: Operation School Bell, vision, dental, Angel Tree, etc;
  • coordinates, communicates and/or contacts parents to inform them of school activities;
  • follows up with parents on health related issues;
  • translate letters and forms, and interprets at meetings job related duties;
  • informs and keeps school nurse apprised of student’s health or physical requirements;
  • learn and apply district policies and procedures related to student health care/record keeping requirements;
  • assist with monitoring functionality, (wear and tear, batteries, pads are not expired, alarm works, etc) of district AEDs, including required check and documentation;
  • performs or assists with specialized physical healthcare procedures for students, as trained, including but not limited to: blood glucose monitoring, diabetic care, toileting, catheterizations and/or g-tube feedings in presence of a school administrator, designee, or district nurse, (In the absence of the school administrator, designee, or district nurse there shall be a second employee present) and administration of medications such as epinephrine auto-injectors, glucagon, inhalers, nebulizers, or other procedures as allowed by law;
  • may be required to assist at other district school sites as needed;
  • support administrators with information assistance related to health and job related duties;
  • may be required to attend field trips for medical support; 
  • performs other job related duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • record keeping that relates to the delivery of health services, correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation;
  • laws and codes which control and limit the provision of health services;
  • laws and policies that deal with the confidentiality of student records;
  • emergency medical treatment, with a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid certificate clinical and office apparatus;
  • student behavior and characteristics;

Ability to:

  • take responsibility for student health services under general supervision;
  • maintain student health records;
  • interact with students, parents and the community in a warm, friendly communicative manner;
  • develop a warm rapport with both students and staff;
  • read, write, and speak clearly and effectively in communications with both staff and community in English and Spanish;
  • speak in groups and facilitate public meetings in both English and Spanish;
  • demonstrate organizational and leadership skills;
  • demonstrate understanding, patience, warmth, and a receptive attitude toward children;
  • to understand and carryout oral and written instructions;
  • maintain collaborative and cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents, and governmental and private-sector agencies;
  • deal with stressful situations;

 

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Proof of high school diploma or GED equivalent required at time of hire;
  • A satisfactory past work history and/or a favorable recommendation from the school or organization from which they received their training.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak Spanish.

 

License Required:

  • A CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid certificate 

 

Requirements / Qualifications

One year of experience working in a health school setting is preferred. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent MUST have a current CPR and First Aid certificate
