Department of Fine/Applied/Performing Arts
The Emeritus Institute Department of Fine/Applied/Performing Arts propels older adult students in their mental acuity and creative expression by providing curricula designed to foster and refine academic understanding, innovation, and scalable skills in the creation of artistic works.
Curricula and Teaching Theory:
Courses in this department are designed for the older adult and are taught using the principles of geragogy (older adult educational theory). This faculty member may be assigned courses which have a lecture/lab split.
Core subjects in this department include:
• Lecture: Art Appreciation, Art History, and Contemporary Art and Culture
• Lecture/Lab: Painting (beginning, intermediate, and advanced): acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolor, portrait, and plein air; Drawing (beginning, intermediate, and advanced): sketching and life drawing.
Teach Emeritus Institute Painting and Drawing and related courses to a diverse student population.
Assignments may include morning, midday, and evening courses offered in in-person and/or online modalities. Some teaching assignments may be for online classes scheduled asynchronously. In-person teaching assignments may primarily be scheduled off-campus and held throughout south Orange County at various teaching sites with required travel between sites. Faculty will be required to utilize CANVAS, which is the Learning Management System of the South Orange County Community College District.
Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and provide critical feedback on assignments and discussions in support of student success.
Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including complying with the applicable Course Outline of Record(s) (COR); respond to and evaluate student work regularly and consistently; inform students on a timely basis of their progress in the course throughout the term; and respond to student academic concerns, as appropriate, in a timely manner. Comply with district, college, and division/school policies in the performance of duties.
Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle and offer students a rich variety of expertise, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning.
Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience with relevant teaching techniques to engage diverse student populations such as African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and other disproportionately impacted students.
Participate in curriculum development and/or serve on department, division/school, college, and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.
Remain current in the discipline of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications, Artificial Intelligence) as necessary to assist and support student success.
Engage in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.
Maintain formal office hours; stay current on information as discussed in department and division/school meetings.
Provide an average of one (1) hour per week of college service that supports the division/school, college and/or District goals through active participation in one or more of the following categories: committee work on the department, division/school, college, and/or district level; non-classroom college, district, or community activities; department/division/school activities, events, or meetings; student club advisor activities or events.
Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students.
Regular and consistent performance of the requirements of your position.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Must meet one of the following qualifications from State Chancellor’s Office:
Bachelor’s degree with a major related to the subject of the course taught such as fine arts, art, visual studio arts such as drawing and/or painting and either (A) or (B):
(A)Thirty hours or two semester units of course work in understanding the needs of the older adult, taken at an accredited institution of higher education, or approved by the district. This requirement may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a non-credit instructor.
(B)One year of professional experience working with older adults OR
An associate degree with a major related to the subject of the course taught such as fine arts, art, visual studio arts such as drawing and/or painting:
and two years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught;
and sixty hours or four semester units of coursework or classwork in understanding the needs of the older adult, taken at an accredited institution of higher education, or approved by the district.
This last requirement may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor.
OR the equivalent.
AND
2. Commitment to equity and diversity. All applicants must have demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff. The applicant must be able to demonstrate how these factors relate to the need for equity minded practices within an educational environment.
Desired Qualifications:
• Two or more semesters of professional, post-secondary faculty teaching experience in painting and/or drawing specifically in a non-credit, lifelong learning academic program serving older adult students.
• Master of Fine Arts degree in fine arts, studio arts, illustration, painting, or drawing: *NOTE: “Master’” as used here refers to a master’s degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing and painting. It does not refer to the “Master of Fine Arts” (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing or other nonplastic arts.) *CCCCO 2022 Minimum Qualifications Handbook
• Demonstrated experience in developing lower-division curriculum at the college/university level.
• Evidence of ability to collaborate with faculty and students across multiple discipline-specific program areas.
• Expertise in culturally responsive teaching in fine arts, particularly applied through a gerontological/geragogical lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for older adult lifelong learners; demonstrated ability to address and close equity gaps from a gerontological/gerological perspective related to older adult societal retention; demonstrated advocacy for the inclusion and well-being of older adults; recent experience working with diverse student populations such as African Americans, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other marginalized groups.

Full-time faculty are paid on the Academic Salary Schedule (see Wages for salary placement criteria in the Academic Employee Master Agreement located under Contracts on the District website). The District offers a comprehensive package of insurance benefits which includes medical and dental insurance, vision-care plan, life insurance and dependent life coverage, accidental death and dismemberment coverage, long-term disability plan, and legal plan. All premiums are fully paid by the District.
