APPLE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

 

CLASS TITLE: CUSTODIAN II

 

BASIC FUNCTION

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of cleaning and custodial duties during evening hours; maintain classrooms, offices and facilities at a school site in an orderly and secure condition; provide work direction and guidance to assigned personnel.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Custodian II performs custodial duties and serves in a lead capacity at an assigned elementary or middle school site.  The Custodian I performs routine custodial duties at an assigned school site or District facility.  Custodian III incumbents perform custodial duties and serve in a lead capacity at an assigned high school site.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

 

  • Train and provide work direction to assigned custodial personnel at a school site. (E1)
  • Receive and store cleaning supplies; assure adequate materials and equipment. (E1)
  • Communicate with site personnel and administrators regarding facility discrepancies and special custodial requests. (E1)
  • Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias and other facilities in an orderly and secure condition. (E1)
  • Sweep, mop, strip and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets. (E1)
  • Empty, wash and line trash receptacles; pick up litter and sweep walkways. (E1)
  • Clean restroom toilets, sinks, mirrors and walls; stock paper supplies and fill dispensers. (E1)
  • Clean chalkboards and erasers; dust furniture, desks and other areas. (E1)
  • Maintain security of assigned areas by locking doors, gates and windows and setting alarms. (E1)
  • Replace light bulbs and make minor repairs and adjustments to furniture and equipment. (E2)
  • Operate a variety of cleaning equipment required to maintain and clean a school campus including but not limited to; power washers, sweepers, vacuum cleaner, buffer, waxer and/or stripper. (E3)
  • Move desks and furniture and prepare for meetings and special events. (E3)
  • Participate in major cleaning projects during summer months as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  1. Graduation from High School or equivalent.

 

  1. Two (2) years of increasingly responsible custodial experience.

            Or

                        Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the essential duties may be substituted for the required experience and/or education.

 


LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
  • Valid First Aid Certification.
  • Valid CPR Certification preferred.
  • A valid California Drivers License preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Modern cleaning methods, equipment and materials used in custodial work.
  • Principles of crew leadership.
  • Preferred methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls and fixtures.
  • Operation and care of cleaning equipment including vacuum cleaner, buffer, waxer and stripper.
  • Health and safety regulations.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Provide leadership to a custodial crew.
  • Clean and maintain classrooms, offices and other facilities in an orderly and secure condition.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Follow established cleaning schedules.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Order and store cleaning supplies properly.
  • Adjust work schedule during school break periods.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Standing or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Seeing to read and understand written materials.
  • Bending or twisting at the waist to move furniture or operate equipment.
  • Reaching overhead and horizontally.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of cleaning equipment.
  • Lift or move up to 75 pounds. 

 

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor and outdoor school campus environment.
  • Subject to time lines and interruptions.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and fumes from cleaning agents and chemicals.
  • Work evenings or weekends.

 

HAZARDS:

  • Exposed to chemical agents and associated fumes from cleaning supplies.
  • Exposed to dust and odors from cleaning agents and chemicals.
  • The noise level is moderate.
