CERTIFICATED PERSONNEL DUTIES

 

TITLE:  District Library/Media Specialist 

EVALUATED BY:   Assistant Superintendent, Education or Designee

 

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Education Services, the District Library/Media Specialist is the District lead that will provide vision, leadership, and support to current and emerging technologies for the site library/media centers. As the lead, the District Library/Media Specialist provides the leadership and expertise pertaining to the development and support of each sites’ library/media center and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program.                                                                   

 

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                         

  1. Support instruction and information literacy skill acquisition across all content areas.
  2. Assist in the building of site library collections that accomplish the following:
    1. Reflect the languages spoken by students and their families and those taught in bi-literacy programs.
    2. Represent and connect with the cultures and interests of all students and their families in positive and relevant ways.
    3. Build students’ technological and critical competencies.
  3. Supervise and coordinate the selection, acquisition, updating, recycling, processing, organization, inventory, distribution/circulation of instructional resources for utilization in school curriculum programs.
  4. Assist in the development and annual monitoring of an approved list of materials found in print, media, or digital format.
  5. Assist in the selection of print, media, and digital materials to ensure all types of diversity are represented and promote cultural and linguistic diversity awareness.
  6. Develop, maintain, and monitor the sites’ library/media center technology infrastructure, including managing and coordinating the library/media center’s online presence, website, and online resources.
  7. Daily maintenance and administration of an integrated library system.
  8. Provide the technical training, support, and monitoring of each sites’ media tech.
  9. Provide training for site personnel on research techniques and the information literacy skills needed for students to achieve the standards and succeed as a 21st century learner.
  10. Develop and justify budget requests for each sites’ library/media center, in consultation with staff members, administrators, and teachers.                                                        
  11. Establish and maintain a collaborative partnership with school library/media centers, public libraries, and community agencies.                                  
  12. Provide guidance and leadership in professional learning and District meetings.                                                                                 
  13. Coordinate and facilitate regular meetings of district media techs.                           
  14. Performs other job-related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in library science, or library and information science  OR
    • Combination of education and other accomplishments that is equivalent to the above.  (Must provide evidence if claiming equivalency to a master’s degree).
  • Valid California teaching credential
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience
  • Authorized to teach English Learners (CLAD, etc.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Professional experience in an academic library.
  • Significant experience creating and maintaining web technologies (blogs, videos, screencasts, podcasts, etc.).
  • Experience in adopting, implementing, integrating, and evaluating emerging technologies and services that support information literacy skill acquisition.
  • Experience teaching library research skills and information competency, including using instructional technology and online learning objects for delivery of instruction and interaction with students.
  • Knowledge of digital repository projects and metadata development and maintenance for local digital collections.
  • Experience working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic, and disability backgrounds, with a wide variance of information-seeking skills and technological competence.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing environment and collaborate with various departmental service units.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in an office or school environment, and involves contact with students and staff.

Physical Requirements:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:

Salary Grade:

Placement on the teacher salary schedule based on education and experience

 

Salary Range:

$61,034 to $99,981 (placement on Teacher Salary Schedule) and Library Department Chair stipend
