Purpose Statement:
The job of Library Media Assistant is done for the purpose/s of maintaining library collection at school site; implementing age appropriate programs for students utilizing library resources; selecting appropriate items in support of classroom instructing; performing clerical functions related to collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of library materials and/or textbooks.
Essential Functions
• Distributes various books and media for the purpose of providing requested classroom reference materials.
• Inventories equipment and materials for the purpose of documenting losses and/or maintaining availability of materials.
• Monitors students in library for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of students.
• Processes orders and/or materials (e.g. books, periodicals, films, mail, textbooks, fines/fees, bank deposits, school pictures, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining library collection controls, disseminating information and/or completing transactions.
• Repairs books and materials for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books and library materials.
• Schedules appropriate instructional material for the purpose of ensuring the availability of library facilities.
• Supports Librarian for the purpose of assisting them in the completion of their job functions.
• Under the direction of the classroom teacher assists with the development of grade-level activities, programs and materials (e.g. thematic units, creative literature presentations, videotapes, lesson plans, etc.) for the purpose of motivating and training students to use library resources.
• Under the direction of the librarian assists teachers, students, and other personnel for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments.
Other Functions
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
• Attends meetings (e.g. in-service, workshops, seminars, etc.) for the purpose of re-keying and/or conveying information.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment; performing standard bookkeeping; performing accounting procedures; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and utilizing pertinent software applications.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: elements of library operation
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and working with constant interruptions.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is an opportunity to impact the Organization’s services
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 20% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under a generally hazard free environment.
Experience: Job related experience is desired.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
