Enjoy science, working with kids, being outside? Ideal for people with a strong science background who have experience supervising children and outdoor activities. The Los Angeles County Outdoor Science School (LACOSS) is currently hiring one temporary full-time science instructor/Naturalist for spring 2024. LACOSS is a residential outdoor science field study program that emphasizes hands-on, inquiry-based, learning. Content includes a variety of ecosystem science concepts. The Outdoor Science School operates at a beautiful location in the mountains near Los Angeles, California. DUTIES Organize and lead science learning activities for 5th/ 6th grade students, using phenomena-based, hands-on teaching techniques in the outdoors. The curriculum includes NGSS science concepts in ecosystems, astronomy, geology, and science practices. Naturalists also lead evening programs, train/supervise volunteer cabin leaders, and other duties common to residential outdoor education programs. Hours vary and are scheduled to be completed within a 40-hour work week. Duties include on-call 2 nights per week.
Requirements / Qualifications
BA/BS in science or BA with courses in science required. Previous experience supervising children aged 8-13 required. First Aid/CPR certification (WFA preferred) is required. Must be physically able to lead instructional hikes in a semi-wilderness setting. Must be able to deal patiently and constructively with children and teens. Good personal and group communication skills. Ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument is desired. Willing to work irregular hours.
