Program Specialist/Coordinator
Description of position: Serves as a knowledgeable professional in the Individual Education Program (IEP) planning process. Observes, consults with and assists resource specialists, designated instruction and services instructors, and special class teachers. Plans programs, coordinates curricular resources, and evaluates effectiveness of programs for individuals with exceptional needs. Participates in each school’s staff development, program development, and innovation of special methods and approaches. Provides coordination, consultation and program development primarily in one specialized area or areas of his or her expertise. Responsible for assuring that pupils have full educational opportunity regardless of the district of residence.
Directly Responsible to: Director of Pupil Services
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Perform the program specialist services as established by State and Federal regulations.
2. Provide assistance to the Special Education teaching staff in planning, organizing, and coordinating staff functions, facilities, materials, and equipment purchase and use.
3. Serve as a member of the Support Team to assist in the coordination of Special Education services.
4. Develop and coordinate the determination, delivery, and effectiveness of relevant in service/staff development activities for specific Special Education staff.
5. Develop and/or coordinate effective practices in instruction.
6. Develop and/or coordinate the alignment and articulation of core curriculum between the district, county Special Education programs, and non-public schools.
7. Develop and/or coordinate the alignment and articulation of a planned curriculum for extended school year.
8. Assist as chairperson (administrative designee) or member of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team as directed by Director of Pupil Services.
9. Assist in the coordination of the development, selections, and/or procurement of curriculum materials and equipment for community-based instruction, severely handicapped, and autism.
10. Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of program evaluation.
11. Make recommendations relative to the selection of new staff and placement of Special Education personnel.
12. Assist in educating staff in relevant community-based and critical-skills methodology.
13. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1. Holds or is making progress toward a valid administrative services credential.
2. Holds a valid special education credential, clinical services credential, health services credential, or a school psychologist authorization.
3. Has advanced training and related experience in the education of individuals with exceptional needs.
4. Has a specialized in-depth knowledge in preschool disabilities, career vocational development, or one or more areas of major disabling conditions.
5. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License if required by the duties of the assignment.
6. Experience and/or training appropriate to fulfill requirements of the position.
