Under the general direction of the Network Operations Coordinator, the Network Systems Engineer I will provide engineering support toward the installation and administration of Networking for Kern County Superintendent of Schools and school districts in the Kern County region; will provide planning for local-and wide-area networking strategies for school districts and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office; provide support for the educational and administrative data communications systems; is responsible for undertaking broad and complex assignments in support of highly complex, multi-platform network systems. The Kern County Superintendent of Schools installation consists of Cisco, Novell, Microsoft, Linux and other network systems using Ethernet (10, 100, gigabit), T1, Fiber optic, Microwave, and Wireless technologies.
Requirements / Qualifications
Education: The Network Systems Engineer I must be a graduate of a four year college or university, with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration or computer science highly desirable. Equivalent experience in an applied setting regarding the above technology can be substituted for the college degree. Experience: Must have three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in a related area of microcomputer systems; and have two (2) years of experience with local-area or wide-area network design and management of networks, including experience with network routing. Must be well versed with IP addressing and subnet-masking procedures; at least one year experience with Servers; hands on experience with routers desirable, not theory only; must have LAN/WAN experience; a MIS background is also desirable; must have experience with Linux or Windows Server, Network Operating System (NOS) certification desirable; network experience in an Ethernet environment; must have a systems management background; SNMP management background and experience is desirable; project management experience desirable. Candidates achieving a rating of 70% or better will qualify to continue in the eligibility screening process.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Some positions may require proof of privately owned automobile insurance and the possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle operator’s license. Fingerprint clearance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met. Must present verification of completion of Child Abuse Mandated Reporter training or obtain verification within six (6) weeks of hire and annually thereafter, as required by the California Child Abuse Neglect Reporting Act. For entry-level positions, veterans shall be allowed an additional credit of five points to their composite score. A copy of your DD-214 must be submitted at the time of application to receive veteran’s credit. This position has a probationary period of six months or 130 days in paid service, whichever is longer.
