Basic Functions:
The Behavior Support Specialist will provide extra support within educational settings which contains students with academic deficiencies, extraordinary special needs or who may be medically fragile. Under direction of an administrator, teacher, and/or school psychologist, the BSS will attend trainings as assigned; support academic, IEP and behavior plans; and assist the teacher in meeting the educational needs of identified students.
Examples of Responsibilities and Duties:
Work with students on a one-to-one or small group basis.
Assist in basic clerical tasks.
Conducts disciplinary measures as appropriate.
Performs tutorial assistance in the core subjects.
Provide emotional support to students; respond in a consistent, calm manner to students' behavior.
Assists with functional analysis of student behavior (identify antecedents, behaviors, and consequences, as well as, determining the motivation for the exhibited behavior).
Observes, records and completes accurate data on student's health records and achievement of academic, IEP or behavior plan objectives.
Implements instructional and behavioral interventions for individuals or small groups.
Assists in supporting other staff in behavior intervention procedures.
Follows federal, state and local requirements for implementing emergency interventions.
Provides supervision in such activities as field trips, rest time, recreation periods, meal time and busing as required.
Prepares materials necessary for instructional purposes.
May be assigned to other programs in similar position as needed.
Helps execute medical orders/instructions for the physical care of students with special needs.
Accompanies student(s) in transport to and from school activities when necessary.
Performs other assigned tasks as requested.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
Behavior intervention strategies; developmental, emotional, and behavioral disabilities; non-violent verbal and physical intervention techniques; proper English grammar, punctuation and sentence structure; basic algebra; basic computer functions; safe measures of seizure care; first-aid skills; and CPR.
Ability to:
Read notes, memos, and reports of a moderately complex nature; effectively interact with students, teachers, staff and the public; determine steps in a process; structure time effectively; assist with maintenance of student files and the retrieval of pertinent information; recognize and follow procedures when disruptive, abusive, or dangerous behavior occurs; understand and address the needs of students with special needs; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; maintain confidentiality of student records and communication; meet schedules and deadlines; read, interpret, and apply rules, regulartions, and policies; rapidly learn from training methods, techniques, and materials to be used in instruction and in behavioral interventions with students.
Recommended Experience:
Multiple years working with "at-risk" students within a classroom or small group setting. participation in training activities aligned to the basic duties and responsibilities outlined.
Education:
Minimum: Graduate of High School or Equivalent
Proficient in Basic Algebra and Language Arts Skills
Shall meet the NCLB instructional requirement
Requirements:
Minimum: Shall pass a TB test
Shall pass the district instructional aide test
Shall understand and perform basic computer functions
Shall have exhibited regular/punctual attendance in previous
employment or job assignment.
Must not have been convicted of a felony

Possess a high school diploma or its equivalency; NCLB Compliant Must pass D.O.J background check; Must pass a TB test Requirements: AA degree, 48 college units or an NCLB Certificate
