Job Summary

Job Summary

Under the direction of the site principal and AVID coordinator and with the assistance of the AVID elective teachers, provide tutoring to AVID students during the AVID elective class for a maximum of 19 hours a week. Tutors will tutor students in Calexico Unified School District’s junior high school and high school. AVID students are taking rigorous courses, and they need college tutors to provide academic support and to be good role models.

ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES NEED THE FOLLOWING Tutors must be capable of providing positive support for pupils, in individual and small group settings. They must possess good oral and written communication skills along with the ability to relate to pupils with multicultural backgrounds. Candidates must have obtained an Associate (or higher) degree or have completed at least 2 years (48 units) of study at an institution of higher education. Must have a strong math and English language arts background, evidenced by college transcript. AVID Tutor I Rate: $25.00 per hour An “AVID Tutor I” is an individual who meets the minimum qualifications of an instructional aide and possesses a B.A./B.S. or M.A./M.S. from any accredited college or university from any state or country. AVID Tutor II Rate: $20.00 per hour An “AVID Tutor II” in an individual that meets the minimum qualifications of an instructional assistant in one of the following ways: 1. Possesses an A.A./A.S. from any accredited college 2. Minimum of 48 semester units in core subjects from an accredited college or university; or 3. Has passed a basic skills test for paraprofessionals ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Provide academic support via tutorial assistance to students using homework/lesson, discussion groups, Socratic questioning, writing to learn, the writing process, and cooperative learning techniques. Take an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students. Serve as a role model/mentor to AVID students by being a lifelong learner, demonstrating appropriate academic and social behaviors and wearing appropriate attire at all times. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow. Determine from student’s notes and discussions, the concepts that need to be taught or retaught. Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc. Become familiar with the materials in the AVID Curriculum Libraries. Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students. Attend the AVID tutor training and implement the AVID tutorial process with students in all core academic areas. In addition, participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned. Conduct mini lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills and other aspects of college preparation. Work with students in any phase of the writing process such as brainstorming, clustering, revision and editing. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern. Demonstrate patience and perseverance in working with students who need extra support. Perform related duties as assigned. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Attendance at all tutor training sessions, meetings or other required events. Encourage high academic achievement. Establish effective rapport with pupils. Motivate students to continue in a college preparatory course of study throughout high school. Maintain professional relationships with pupils, parents, colleagues and supervising staff members. Knowledge of district curriculum, school instructional program and intervention programs. Knowledge of successful techniques in classroom management and instructional planning. Ability to analyze, interpret and communicate about data. Facilitate, communicate orally in writing and listening.
