BURTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT LIBRARY AIDE JOB SUMMARY Library Aide will, under supervision of the site administrator(s) and in cooperation with the Library Media Specialist, perform duties of a responsible nature including maintaining school site library collection; Implementing age-appropriate programs for students utilizing library resources; Selecting appropriate items in support of classroom instruction and educating students on the proper use of the library resources. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: District policies and procedures as they apply; Methods and practices of office management involving data processing and other computer equipment; Operation of office machines used in a modern office environment; Formats and procedures for entering and retrieving various types of data; Record keeping techniques; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; Oral and written communication skills; Report formats and deadlines; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. Ability to: Operate office equipment and perform clerical work of average difficulty with minimum supervision. Review, code, check, and enter data on a computer. Type at least 50 words net per minute from clear copy. Verify accuracy and completeness of documents and process data. Make simple arithmetic calculations with accuracy. Compile, maintain, and submit accurate and complete records and reports. Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplication, typing and maintaining records. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Communicate well with others. Work confidentially. Meet schedules and deadlines. Plan and organize work. Work flexible hours. Secure fidelity bonding. Speak and understand Spanish (desirable). Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or possession of GED required; supplemented by course work in secretarial science, business and/or office practices or related field is desired and one (1) year of responsible clerical experience; one (1) year of child/youth related experience or equivalent. Possession of valid First Aid Certificate and possession of a valid California Drivers License. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION 1. Perform a wide variety of specialized and responsible clerical work independently; interpret and apply rules and regulations as appropriate. LIBRARY AIDE Burton Elementary School District 2. Conducts classes in a variety of formats (e.g. story telling, puppet plays, etc.) for the purpose of promoting the use and enjoyment of literature. 3. Distributes various books and media for the purpose of providing requested classroom reference materials. 4. Instructs students for the purpose of educating them on the proper use of the library resources (i.e. classification system, card catalog, care of materials, etc.). 5. Inventories equipment and materials in library collection for the purpose of documenting losses and/or maintaining availability of materials. 6. Processes orders (e.g. books, periodicals, films, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining library collection controls. 7. Promotes library use related to special holidays, seasonal activities, etc. for the purpose of motivating students to use library resources. 8. Researches availability of materials and media for the purpose of selecting appropriate items. 9. Assists teachers, students, and other personnel for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or classroom assignments. 10. Participates in District meetings of library aides for the purpose of communicating information and gaining feedback and/or direction on a variety of issues. 11. Attends appropriate staff meetings and inservice training. 12. Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. 13. Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of this job description are the following essential physical requirements. 1. Seldom = Less than 25% 3. Often = 51 - 75% 2. Occasional = 25 - 50% 4. Very Frequent = 76%+ 4 Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations. 3 Ability to stand for extended periods of time. 4 Ability to see for purposes of reading printed matter and observing students. 4 Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels. 4 Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation. 2 Ability to bend and twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl. 2 Ability to lift 50 pounds. 3 Ability to carry 25 pounds. 4 Ability to operate office equipment. 4 Ability to reach in all directions.
