DEFINITION: Under the direction of the High School Principal, provides academic, personal, and career counseling to secondary students, communicates with students, parents, and appropriate District staff regarding student progress and post secondary options.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists students in developing an educational plan and set goals for their high school years;
- Provides scholarship information in a timely manner to students and parents;
- Provides college and career guidance to students and develops academic plans with students to meet college or career prerequisites;
- Develops and maintains a Career Center for students;
- Advises students on appropriate and available classes and programs;
- Monitors students to assure that students are on the path to graduation;
- Makes certain special education students are included in all senior activities;
- Visits on-site classrooms and feeder schools to disseminate information;
- Prepares, maintains, and evaluates transcripts, profiles, cumulative folders, records, and reports related to students;
- Conducts student conferences to assist students with decision-making, proper behavior, and goal setting;
- Communicates and meets with students and parents over postsecondary options;
- Makes referrals to school psychologists and/or outside agencies when there are individual student needs;
- Conducts orientation activities for students new to the school;
- Provides postsecondary transitional activities;
- Assists with the administration of state tests, such as the STAR program, CAHSEE, and Advanced Placement tests;
- Serves as a resource for teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students
- Coordinates the Career Fair and the Elective Fair;
- Maintains a comprehensive list of district and community resources;
- Develops annually a guidance program calendar;
- Annually reviews the secondary guidance program;
- Conducts and maintains a follow-up study on secondary graduates from the comprehensive site;
- Participates in developing a budget to support guidance activities; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and skills of:
- Graduation and college entrance requirements;
- Counseling techniques, Education Code, rules, and regulations related to counseling;
- Child Abuse Reporting laws;
- Testing and registration procedures;
- Counseling theory, ethics and associated legal confidentiality requirements;
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy;
- Oral and written communication skills;
- Record-keeping techniques;
- Special Needs students; and
- Diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds.
Ability to:
- Maintain confidentiality;
- Provide counseling services to assigned students;
- Communicate with students, parents, and appropriate District staff regarding student progress;
- Identify student needs;
- Operate office equipment;
- Perform a variety of administrative tasks; and
- Present a positive image of Golden Valley Unified School District.
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s degree and two years counseling experience; teaching experience preferred.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid California Pupil Personnel Services credential
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
