PRIMARY FUNCTION: In support of improving student achievement, the Education Specialist will provide instructional support and coaching to teachers as they work to ensure that each student with special needs is able to reach his or her academic potential. The Education Specialist’s primary role is to work with both special education and general education teachers to support best practices in using data, provide analysis of school-wide trends in instruction, and make recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of need. As an advisor to teachers and the leadership team, the Education Specialist serves as an instructional leader for our students with special needs by providing direct instructional support to assigned schools to accelerate the learning of students experiencing learning loss due to distance learning. The Education Specialist model represents a change in the way time and expertise is used, and will result in a renewed focus on student achievement and more individualized support for special education teachers and students with disabilities. We expect that Specialists will spend the majority of their time in their assigned schools partnering with the principal to drive instructional strategy and providing instructional support to increase student achievement of our students with special needs. The Education Specialist must take a hands-on approach to improving instruction and effectiveness by working at various levels (classroom-, school-, system-wide) to directly improve instruction for students with disabilities and foster teacher development. This may include modeling lessons in classrooms, helping teacher groups plan instruction, creating system-wide policies and procedures, and facilitating professional development.
