SALARY
All new hires will be placed at the starting salary step of this classification ($7,253). Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year, up to the maximum step 5 of this salary range ($7,621).

ABOUT THE JOB: Under direction, maintains and makes mechanical and computerized electrical system repairs to gas, alternative fuel, and diesel buses, trucks, tractors, construction equipment over 12 horsepower, mowers, boom trucks, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, parking lot sweepers, and other automotive equipment; and performs related work as required.

JOB DUTIES: inspects, diagnoses, and makes skilled and semiskilled repairs of mechanical defects and problems with computerized engine management and electrical systems in buses, automobiles, trucks, and other mechanical equipment; performs all major engine and other mechanical repair work; maintains mechanical equipment and performs general overhauling; repairs transmissions, differentials, distributors, lights, radiators, starters, alternators, universal joints, vehicle air conditioning systems, and hydraulic and air brake systems; aligns wheels; adjusts and relines brakes; turns drums; tunes engines; installs batteries, wiring, window glass, and door handles; greases and services equipment; mounts, inspects, and balances tires; performs smog testing and repairs to all district vehicles; inspects and certifies compressed natural gas fuel tanks; inspects and maintains particulate exhaust filters; performs opacity tests on diesel vehicles; fabricates parts and brackets; purchases or recommends purchase of needed parts and tools; drives and tests buses; provides emergency road service to disabled buses and other district vehicles; may lead the work of others; and works overtime to make emergency repairs.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent; any combination equivalent to one year of experience equivalent to full-time work as a journey-level mechanic involving work on light and heavy duty buses and trucks. (Journey-level is typically acquired through four (4) years of experience working under a journey-level tradesperson whom provided training.) Part-time work experience will be considered and adjusted appropriately. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

LICENSE: Must possess and maintain within the first six months of employment a valid Class A or B California Driver License with a passenger endorsement, and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate.  Candidates must submit a recent (within the last 30 days) original DMV driving record by the oral rating exam.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING….

Knowledge of:  Tools, equipment (including computerized diagnostic equipment), and procedures used in the general overhaul, repair and maintenance of buses, trucks, mowers, tractors, backhoes, and other heavy duty equipment; laws governing equipment and vehicle standards for school buses; computerized engine management systems, including smog scopes, infrared and opacity meters; light and heavy duty mechanical systems; vehicle air conditioning systems and the laws governing them; and safety practices and procedures.

Ability to:  Diagnose malfunctions and make electrical and mechanical repairs to a variety of gasoline, alternative fuel, and diesel engines; operate a wide variety of equipment and tools used in repairing or servicing motorized equipment; arc and acetylene weld to fabricate parts or repair vehicles; learn to perform Smog Check II, compressed natural gas, and particulate exhaust filter inspections and/or opacity tests; learn new skills to keep current with technology changes; maintain accurate related work records; follow oral and written instructions; read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; and lead the work of others.
