BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of EOPS/CARE/NextUp, CalWORKs & Guardian Scholars the EOPS Student Services Advisor will provide specialized support to students and staff in the EOPS/CARE programs to advance the success of socioeconomically disadvantaged and disproportionately impacted students. The EOPS Student Services Advisor will provide over and above advisement services, with a focus on financial aid, and will work in conjunction with the Financial Aid Office in the delivery of services. The EOPS Student Services Advisor will also be responsible for the timely distribution of EOPS Book Vouchers and Grants to all eligible program participants. This position will support with the development and facilitation of program workshops, presentations, and activities.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Provide specialized advisement and paraprofessional services to students in specialty field such as career or education planning, job placement, admissions and records, Financial Aid, Extended Opportunities and Services (EOP&S) or other assigned area.

 

Interview individual students to determine program eligibility and obtain information required to develop student educational, financial and career plans.

 

Analyze student date and certify eligibility for program participation as required; interpret, apply and explain complex rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.

 

Select, administer, score and interpret tests and assessment instruments; analyze alternative courses of action and assist students in developing appropriate plans.

 

Communicate with academic counselors, District personnel, business leaders, social service agencies, community resources, educational institutions and others to coordinate activities, exchange information and refer students for further assistance.

 

Maintain current knowledge of a variety of complex regulations, requirements and policies related to assigned specialty area.

 

Develop forms, handbooks, manuals and other written materials to facilitate student advisement.

 

Plan, develop and conduct workshops to provide students with specialized assistance and information in assigned area.

 

Train and provide work direction to assigned personnel and student assistants; recruit and select hourly employees as needed.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Any combination of equivalent to: two years of college course work in Social Sciences and Human Service and three years of increasingly responsible experience in a student services or related field.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with EOPS/CARE & CalWORKs or similar programs.

Experience and knowledge of federal and state financial aid programs

Experience utilizing technology for record keeping and delivering support services to student populations impacted by education inequity, health disparities, environmental injustice, or poverty.

Demonstrated experience and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Bachelor's degree in social science, human services or related field.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Typical office setting.

Extensive computer work.

Long periods of standing and sitting.

SALARY

Starting salary is $5,216 per month. Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Salary increases are granted on the first day of the month following each year of service, until Step F is reached ($6,706 monthly).

 

Employees contribute 8% of their earnings toward the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a full-time, twelve-month position subject to a probationary period. The standard work week is 40 hours of scheduled duty per week of not more than five consecutive workdays. Working hours will be in-person, Monday through Friday 8:00am until 5:00pm. Schedule may vary to include hours outside of the normal work schedule and weekends depending on operational need.

Sick Leave and Disability

Paid sick leave is granted equal to one day for each month of service. Sick leave days may be accumulated indefinitely.

 

Retirement

Full-time employees contribute a percentage of their regular salary to the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Previous employment performed in a different public retirement system may allow eligibility to continue in the same retirement system.

 

Summer Work Hours

During the summer, employees work eight 32-hour work weeks with full pay.
