Description
Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned. Positions at this level receives only occasional instructions or assistance as new or unusual situation arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior Groundskeeper in that the latter exercises technical and functional oversight over lower level staff.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
• Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor.
Responsibilities and Duties
Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Performs general grounds maintenance work, sweeping walks and parking areas, picking up papers and rubbish, raking leaves and weeding.
• Operate and maintain a variety of grounds keeping equipment including, but not limited to, riding lawn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, edgers, chainsaws, aerators, seeders, cultivators, trenchers, tillers, post hole diggers, backhoe, light truck, tractors, spreaders, jackhammers, mixers, chippers and power washers.
• Plant, prune, stake, water and maintain landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers and shrubs.
• Perform chemical application activities related to maintaining various landscaped campus areas; identify problems and safely mix and apply appropriate chemicals to treat affected areas.
• Maintains sprinkler systems from the valve to the main line; if necessary sprinkler repair as needed.
• Reports grounds condition and water or plant losses due to system malfunction.
• Repairs or replaces broken sprinkler lines, manual or automatic valves, sprinkler heads, automatic controllers, booster pumps, flow switches and other related equipment.
• Repairs and installs plastic/copper/galvanized pipes and fittings.
• Assists with design of sprinkler systems, modify existing system, determines source of water and pressure, and location of valves and triangulation of sprinklers.
• Installs new systems by trenching, connecting to existing water supply, connecting valves, lines and cross-connections, heads, valve boxes, controllers, and other components.
• Inspects, adjusts and maintain controllers for timing and duration of operation.
• Programming of the Irrigation Management Software system, and other controls and clocks.
• Rebuilds sprinkler heads, control valves, time clocks and other system components.
• Assist with repairs to underground irrigation water lateral lines from the 6" mainline to include proper fittings.;
• Repair to underground water lines up to 4" or less in diameter, coming from the mainline.
• Install, maintain, replace radio controlled valves and controls, and electronically controlled water sensors; replaces low voltage wiring;
• Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches and prepares sketches of system designs.
• Assist contractors and provides input during construction project on irrigation system and design.
• Maintain campus flora and fauna including the koi pond; maintain pumps and replace filters.
• Serve as member of the hazardous waste clean-up team as needed.
• Oversee student help or temporary personnel assigned to grounds keeping.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
• Operations, services and activities of a grounds maintenance program.
• Principles and practices of horticultural maintenance and turf management including use of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.
• Irrigation maintenance, radio controlled valves and other water controls.
• Koi pond maintenance.
• Basic tree care to include pruning.
• Operational characteristics of grounds maintenance equipment and tools to include mowers, blowers, weed eaters, backhoe, and trucks.
• Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the preparation and maintenance of athletic turf.
• The operation of a booster pump and irrigation well system.
• Method and practices for maintaining irrigation systems, cut and repair of artificial turf.
• Irrigation Management Systems, software, and other system components.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
• Perform a variety of grounds maintenance work.
• Perform skilled herbicide and pesticide application according to established procedures; accurately measure and apply a variety of chemicals to plants, lawns, and shrubbery.
• Operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, motorized vehicles, power and hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
• Perform sprinkler repairs and unclogging gutters as needed.
• Repair and replace low voltage wiring, underground irrigation water lines, pumps, valves flow switches and other system controls.
• Program and maintain Irrigation Management Systems and other controls and clocks.
• Deliver and pick up items safely and accurately, on and off campus.
• Clean and maintain assigned areas of campus property when necessary.
• Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
• Operate office equipment including computers, and software applications used for maintaining irrigation systems.
• Maintain files and records.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Ensure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
• Work in a variety of environmental and weather conditions.
Education and Experience Requirements
Education:
• Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent.
• Training in landscape, irrigation, and sprinkler system technology.
Experience
• One year of increasingly responsible grounds, irrigation, and sprinkler system maintenance experience.
License or Certificate
• Possession of, or ability to obtain (within 6 months of hire), an appropriate, valid driver's license.
