BRAWLEY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

 CLASS TITLE:  GENERAL MAINTENANCE/CUSTODIAN

 BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of grounds maintenance, custodial and general maintenance activities involved in maintaining District grounds, facilities and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Perform a variety of grounds maintenance, custodial and general maintenance activities involved in maintaining District grounds, facilities and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; respond to work orders; assist in assuring a safe environment for students and staff.

Perform grounds maintenance activities in the beautification of grounds and landscaped areas as assigned; mow, edge, trim and water lawns, fields and other turf grounds; hoe and pull weeds; rake leaves; prepare soil; plant, cultivate, prune and fertilize flowers, trees, grass and shrubs.

Clean classrooms, offices, hallways and other facilities as required; sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets; spot clean and shampoo carpets; spot mop spills; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed.

Move, set-up, assemble and arrange chairs, desks, tables and other furniture; install and replace a variety of office and classroom equipment such as chalk boards, light bulbs, screens and windows; clean chalkboards and whiteboards as required; empty pencil sharpeners as needed.

Alter, repair or construct furniture and articles and structures of wood such as doors, tables, chairs and desks as assigned; maintain walls and patch holes as needed; prepare various surfaces for painting and apply paint as required.

Pick up paper and other debris from floors, grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to site facilities; sweep walkways, driveways, parking lots and concrete surfaces adjacent to campus buildings; empty waste receptacles and replace liners; clean tables, chairs and floors after meals as assigned.

Perform minor maintenance and repairs on lawn mowers, weed-eaters, tractors, vehicles and various other equipment as required; replace parts as needed; maintain and repair sprinklers and irrigation systems as required.

Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals as assigned; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile, walls and windows; clean locker rooms and gymnasiums as required.

Prepare, line and mark athletic fields for sporting events as required; apply pest control methods to eradicate weeds and other pests according to established procedures as assigned.

Perform minor plumbing duties as assigned; inspect and repair leaks, obstructions and general system failures in faucets, drinking fountains, toilets, urinals, sinks and various other fixtures; replace pipes, valves and other plumbing components as appropriate. 

Operate a variety of equipment such as blowers, forklifts, weed-eaters, backhoes, tractors, vacuums, mops, carpet cleaners, buffer/scrubber machines and various hand and power tools.

Communicate with District personnel to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.

Maintain various records and logs related to work orders, inventory and assigned activities.

Monitor inventory levels of designated supplies as required; assist with ordering, receiving and maintaining inventory of supplies as assigned.

Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; turn lights on and off as needed; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; raise and lower flags as assigned.

Identify and report safety, sanitary and security incidents and hazards to appropriate personnel; report major maintenance and repair needs to appropriate personnel.

Drive a school bus or van to transport students safely and efficiently to assigned locations along designated routes as assigned by the position; drive a vehicle to pick up and deliver school supplies as required; replenish fuel as needed.

OTHER DUTIES:

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial, grounds maintenance and minor building maintenance work.

Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.

Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.

Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of flowers, trees and shrubs.

Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.

Operation of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment.

Requirements of maintaining buildings, facilities and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

Proper lifting techniques.

ABILITY TO:

Perform a variety of grounds maintenance, custodial and general maintenance activities involved in maintaining District grounds, facilities and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas.

Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment.

Use various cleaning materials and methods.

Perform a variety of routine general maintenance and repairs.

Move and arrange furniture and equipment.

Maintain routine records related to work performed.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Observe health and safety regulations.

Meet schedules and time lines.

Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to:  graduation from high school and one year grounds maintenance, general maintenance, custodial or related experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Some positions in this classification may require possession of a valid and appropriate California driver’s license.
