Job Goal: To help reduce or eliminate speech and hearing impediments that interfere with the individual student’s ability to derive full benefit from the district’s educational program. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: - Render direct service to qualifying speech and language handicapped elementary and preschool children (ages 3 to 5) as stated in State and consortium criteria. - Consult with teachers and parents regarding speech and language problems and screen referrals to determine whether further testing is necessary. - Screen, assess, and diagnose communicative disorders in elementary and preschool children. - Attend Student Success Team meetings and participate as a member of the school site guidance team. - Serve as a member of the Individualized Education Program Team and facilitate in the determination of special education placements for students. - Establish student speech schedules which are suitable to the organizational framework of the school by consulting with other personnel involved with the student. - Develop Individualized Education Programs and document appropriate goals and objectives for each qualifying student. - Maintain and complete records, individual data, reports, etc., that may be required by the district, state, and/or federal policies or regulations using effective organizational skills. - Plan, communicate and carry out effective instruction, monitoring and adjusting as necessary. - Promote a positive, productive learning environment. - Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with all other special education staff, parents, other agencies for the best interests of each student. - Communicate clearly, using precise language and acceptable oral expressions - Maintain appropriate standards of student behavior. - Maintain meaningful and informative communication with parents through a variety of means. - Demonstrate teaching and classroom management control strategies that are considered appropriate and effective in meeting the needs of each student in both academic and nonacademic areas. - Update knowledge and expertise through attendance at meetings, inservice programs, conferences, and reading current literature. - Maintain and enhance professional competence through participation in professional organizations and other activities on a voluntary or assigned basis. - Demonstrate strong communication skills and work well with people, both adults and children. - Perform all other obligations mandated by laws or Board policy, including the minimum performance expectations and such other reasonable and appropriate tasks assigned by the Administration. - Furnish own reliable transportation in order to travel to other sites as assigned. - Maintain confidentiality and a positive attitude at all times. - Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Terms of Employment: - Valid California Speech/Language Specialist Credential - Masters Degree in Communicative Disorders - Certificate of Clinical Competence for ASHA or CFY desirable - Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language - Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a pre-placement medical examination. Working Conditions: - Lift and carry items up to 20 lbs. - Hearing and speaking to exchange information - Seeing in order to monitor and supervise students in classroom and in large outdoor areas - Bending at the waist, kneeling, crouching, or reaching to assist students and to retrieve and store materials - Walking and standing for extended periods of time to provide instruction - Sitting in order to work at desks or tables Hazards: - Exposure to intermittent noise; moderate interruptions - Potential for contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: -Valid California Speech/Language Specialist Credential -Master Degree in Communicative Disorders -Certificate of Clinical Competence for ASHA or CFY desirable -Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: -185 day work year; -Current DMV Clean Driving Record Report -Criminal Justice Department Fingerprint Clearance; -Pre-employment physical
