PLANT CUSTODIAN-INTERMEDIATE
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Principal or other manager, plan, supervise, direct and participate in plant custodial and minor maintenance work at an intermediate school or similar site; maintain the plant to which assigned in a clean and orderly manner.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Incumbents in this classification work typically at an intermediate school and have responsibility for the overall maintenance program of the school plant. The Plant Custodian_Elementary is an entry level position and works typically at the elementary school. The Plant Custodian_Intermediate works typically for a larger school with greater diversity of facilities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Confer with principal to discuss issues or problems with respect to plant maintenance. E
Open and close campus facilities. E
Check periodically heating and air conditioning, plumbing, fire alarm and security system to assure proper operation. E
Clean exterior walks and yard; pick up paper and trash. E
Replace light bulbs; clean, vacuum, sweep, dust and mop surfaces such as windows, walls, chalkboards, floors, sidewalks and lunch areas. E
Perform semi_skilled painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, heating, glazing and grounds maintenance tasks. E
Operate heating, ventilating, lighting and pumping equipment. E
Obtain needed parts and supplies to make minor repairs to school facilities. E
Direct the moving of furniture and equipment to accommodate needs of the instructional program; direct opening and closing of buildings for meetings, social and civic activities. E
Initiate requests for District maintenance staff assistance for major and unusual repairs. E
Train and instruct subordinates in correct work methods and use of materials and equipment; plan, prepare work schedules and assign employees; inspect work of assigned subordinates. E
Investigate and report on burglaries and vandalism. E
Clean and disinfect restrooms; clean carpets as necessary. E
Assist District maintenance staff with major repairs.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Correct methods, materials and approved procedures related to institutional housekeeping, grounds maintenance and semi_skilled plant maintenance activities.
Health and safety regulations.
Tools and equipment required for minor maintenance and custodial duties.
ABILITY TO:
Plan, direct, supervise and perform plant maintenance, custodial and grounds maintenance services.
Establish priorities.
Utilize safe working conditions.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Work cooperatively with others.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Lift supplies, equipment and furniture.
Perform the essential functions of the job.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years experience in performing school custodial work.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects, not normally exceeding sixty (60) pounds.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
Seeing to perform custodial work and read materials.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate custodial equipment.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
HAZARDS:
Cleaning chemicals.
